Mangaluru, Oct 27: The Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is conducting a reinvestigation into the rape and murder of Sowjanya in Dharmasthala, has intensified its probe. The SIT has now issued notices to police officers and personnel who investigated the case earlier.

More than 15 officers who were involved in various stages of the investigation, from the initial police inquiry to subsequent probes by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), have reportedly been issued notices. The case took place in 2012 within the jurisdiction of the Beltangady police station.

The notices have been issued under Section 160 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), directing the officers to appear for questioning. Those reportedly served notices include then Beltangady police station inspector Bhaskar Rai, PSI Yogish and CID investigating officer DySP Rudramuni.

The SIT has also reportedly issued notices to Kalaimar, who was then an assistant sub-inspector at the Beltangady police station; woman head constable Savitha Shetty; and personnel Sundar Shetty, Krishna, Rishab, Naveen and Bhaskar.

It is understood that the SIT may also issue notices to other officers from the Beltangady police, CID and CBI who were involved in different stages of the investigation.
