Supreme Court orders reinvestigation into Sowjanya case, sets 3-month deadline

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 21: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a reinvestigation into the Dharmasthala Sowjanya rape and murder case, setting a strict three-month deadline to complete the probe.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which had previously investigated the case, had acquitted the accused. Challenging this, Sowjanya's mother, Kusumavathi Gowda, had approached the high court seeking a reinvestigation. After the high court dismissed her plea, she filed a special leave petition before the Supreme Court.

Earlier in July, the apex court had come down heavily on the CBI, slamming the agency for conducting a "shoddy and non-independent" investigation, before reserving its verdict.

A bench comprising justices Sanjay Kumar and Sanjeev Sachdeva had observed, "In fact, the CBI investigating officer acted as a judge. He reviewed the previously collected evidence and submitted his report. He did not conduct any independent investigation."

The bench had noted that this reflected the poor functioning and work ethic of the CBI before reserving its judgment on the matter.

Is it not a shame this case is not yet cleared completely?Let years go ,but the accused should be shown and punished.Hope and pray atleast this time they take real interest and catch him?So that atleast her soul can rest in Heaven in peace.and world will be happy to show his face.(If still lives)Many people may try to put problems on the way but God may not allow this time to hide him.that am sure.

SC has made the most appropriate remarks about CBI. This will definitely frustrate our ruling govt which is very much dependant on CBI, ED, IT and NIA to do its dirty work. These independant federal agencies have become faithful dogs of the govt which is against the constitutional ruling. At the same time govt too should not order them and make them vulnerable to do their dirty illegal work.
