Sowjanya case: Protestors attempt to gherao CM's residence

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore

Bangalore, Oct 22: Demanding CBI probe into the sensational Sowjanya rape and murder case, the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), DYFI, Dasamsa, Nyayakkagi Navu, SSD along with other associations held a massive protest and tried to gherao the chief minister’s residence here on Monday October 21.

Activists of various associations took out a rally from Mysore Bank circle, but they were stopped by police near Freedom Park after which arguments arose between them. A tense atmosphere prevailed for some minutes.

However, bowing to the agitation and demands made by the adamant protestors, the police allowed them to hold public meeting on the road.

State wide protest on October 23

"The CPM will hold a state-level protest in all the district centers on Wednesday October 23 to demand CBI probe and the fight will continue till Sowjanya’s family gets justice," said former MLA, CPM state secretary Sri Ram Reddy.

"Our fight is not against Dharmasthala Kshetra. Our fight is against the 'religiously corrupt' people who have made Dharmasthala a separate republic," said Agni Sridar from Nyayakkagi Navu.

Supporting the protest, he said the state government's handling of the case arouses suspicion. "Not only that, Congress, JD(S), BJP and other parties have joined hands in this matter," he alleged.

Addressing the protestors, state president Gauramma of Janavadi Mahila Sanghatana too demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI. The investigation should be done quickly and strict action should be taken against the accused without any hesitation, she said.

Strict actions should also be taken against the police officials who tried to destroy the evidence in the case. Adding the government should come forward to provide security to women, youth and protect people from communal violence in Dakshina Kannada, he said.

A group of leaders on the occasion visited the CM in his residence office and submitted a memorandum to hand over the case to CBI.

CPM secretary G N Nagaraj, K S Vimala, Geetha, Laxmi, DYFI Bharathraj, G Rajashekar, SFI Ananth Nayak, Vittal Gowda, journalist Manjunath among others were part of the protest.

Ready to hand over the case to CBI, if needed: CM

Meanwhile, chief minister Siddaramaiah said the government will think about handing over the Sowjanya case to the CBI after receiving the CID report on the case.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the golden jubilee celebration of government women’s polytechnic, he said, "Pressure from various associations is increasing by the day and hence, if needed, we will hand over the case to the CBI."

Three people interrogated by CID

With regard to Sowjanya rape and murder case, it is learnt that the CID police have taken in three persons for interrogating.

Sources said the three persons are Mallik Jain, Dheeraj Kella and Uday Jain, who were named in the complaint filed by Sowjanya's parents. The investigation is moving at a brisk pace, it is learnt.

I feel that the Sowjanya Rape and Murder case must be handed over to the CBI. This case could have handled properly by the Police department. After reading the complete episode of Sowjanya's case from the Media I strongly feel there is solid fixing and hidden facts behind this story. The truth must come out no matter whoever it may be the person involved in this murder case.

Dear Dinesh/Jeevan, I agree when it comes to Politics, we comment like enemies. But, when injustice is done to our own people, please, let us be human, let us be united and raise our voice to give justice to the victim, no matter who is the culprit and to which religion and party he belongs to. My heart goes out to poor parents of Sowjanya. Let us put ourselves in their place for a while and think the pain they must be going through. God give them strength to bear the pain and justice to our dear child's soul.

This is expected and well organised... State Ministers and leaders of CM party are openly defending culprits accused by girls parents via Press conference, Being a responsible Govt authority these Netas should be neutral on their stand until full investigation is done by COD/CBI???

I am still not able to digest the fact why this Rape & Murder case has not drawn attention of National Media when DK has been in news on National channels for notorious acts on girls few years back. This news would have been good cause of justice &publicity for Sowjanya's parents!

As regards the Case of Nirbhaya of Delhi the Karnataka Students and women's Organizations spontaneously supported the Cause and took to streets.
But now as regards Sawjanya's Case not even a single National level English or Hindi Media including TV have published (Aired) any news and Students & Women Org from Delhi have not shown slightest interest in the case. Why our English & Hindi Media are North-Centric. Whether the girls of South India are not human beings ?
