Sowjanya case: Dheeraj, Mallik, Uday claim smear campaign

Beltangady, Jan 9: Dheeraj Kella, Mallik Jain and Udaya Jain, whom the parents of rape and murder victim Sowjanya have been accusing of being involved in the crime, on Wednesday January 8 claimed that a smear campaign was on to slander their names, and challenged those levelling allegations against them to take an oath in the presence of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Manjunatha and other deities.
The trio said that they have grown up with their mothers and sisters and have respect for women. The blame for the murder and rape of Sowjanya had been thrust on them with ulterior motives to damage their reputation, they said.
Speaking at a press conference, they said that no complaint was lodged till three months after the incident. "None of the statements of the aggrieved family had mentioned our names. However, our names are being uttered in meetings and gatherings for propaganda.
We are innocent and upset with the developments. Our families too are living in mental strain," they said.
“Complaints were lodged against us with the police and and CoD. We have faced investigation from both the agencies and have been declared innocent. We are prepared for CBI inquiry or brain mapping tests,” they said.
"Mahesh Shetty Timarodi, Atradi Amritha Shetty, Babu Gowda, Chandappa Gowda, Kusumavathi and Vitala Gowda have been served notice by the Kanathur Kshetra to testify their claims on January 19," they said.
Chandan Kamath Dharmasthala, Bhaskara Dharmasthala, Balakrishna Poojary and Prabhakara Gowda Posandodi were present at the press conference.
