Bengaluru: Techie approaches cops after manager makes sexual advances

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Sep 16: A 28-year-old software engineer has filed a complaint in Marathahalli police station against her manager for sexual harassment in workplace.

In her complaint, the woman alleged that her 48-year-old manager identified as Palaniyappa Velumayil, offered her a job in American multinational financial services company in June 2018. He had come across her profile on an online job portal.

The complainant states that she was offered a decent salary and a good position and hence she took up the job. However, once she accepted the job, the harassment began. Velumagil allegedly started calling her in the night and sent lewd messages. He also proposed to marry her and demanded sexual favours, the techie has stated in her complaint.

The woman approached the police, after the manager took her to a restaurant on pretext of buying lunch and misbehaved with her last week.

A case of outraging the modesty of a woman stands filed against Velumayil. The manager is absconding and the police have launched a search.

I feel that the provisions of law are misused here. The techie was on a job hunt. She got a job with a decent pay and position during June 2018. The untoward incident at the restaurant that transpired was pursuant to the messages and calls between the complainant and accused. The complainant should have stopped herself from having conversations with the accused in June 2018 itself rather than prolonging it till September, 2019 which is after 1 year from the day she joined the organisation.

Roping such circumstances under the purview of a criminal case should not be entertained. Common sense: No one would choose a busy restaurant to commit such a heinous offence. As said by the complainant. He must have invited her so that he could propose. Come on guys... That's not outraging the modesty of a woman. Time to think wisely. You don't file a non bailable complaint against someone for expressing his desire to marry her. As such 354 IPC says using criminal force/assault against a woman so as to outrage her modesty.

This is a harsh, brutal, reality, in our society.... women are visualized as sexual objects, on the road, bus, trains, malls, markets, offices, even in the confines of a home..... just about everywhere !!!! Predators, prowl, hoping to snare a lady, even children are not spared, from lecherous men, who stalk with impunity..... women in workplaces, are routinely exploited by colleagues and senior bosses !!!!!

Why did she agree to accept lunch from him, or to lunch with him, if he had already misbehaved with her?
At least she would have refused any favours from her to prove her integrity.
Very sorry that women have to undergo such humiliation at work place.

Totally agree with your point. Why did she even go for the lunch if she was so uncomfortable. This is a false case.
