Mumbai, Jun 15: The Joe Fernandis Hockey Tournament, organised by the Ambernath Hockey Welfare Association (AHWA), has grown into one of Mumbai's most cherished hockey events. What began as a tribute to the late Joe Fernandis and his love for the sport has, over the years, evolved into a platform that brings together players of all ages and abilities, while preserving the rich hockey culture of the city.
Today, the tournament features multiple categories providing opportunities for nearly 400 players to showcase their talent and passion for the game.

At a time when Mumbai no longer hosts regular hockey leagues and many of the city's iconic tournaments have faded away, opportunities for competitive hockey have become increasingly limited. Yet, there remains a large and enthusiastic community of players who continue to enjoy and support the sport. Recognising this need, AHWA has remained steadfast in its commitment to keeping hockey alive by providing a competitive platform year after year.
For the past 15 years, AHWA has worked tirelessly to ensure that players—from budding youngsters to seasoned veterans—continue to have an avenue to participate, compete, and celebrate the game they love. The tournament has become more than just a sporting event; it is a gathering of the hockey fraternity, fostering friendships, sportsmanship, and a shared commitment to the growth of hockey in Mumbai.
The success of the tournament is a testament to the dedication of volunteers, officials, sponsors, former players, and hockey lovers who have stood by the event over the years. Their unwavering support has enabled AHWA to continue its mission of nurturing and promoting hockey despite the challenges faced by the sport in the city.
As the 15th edition concludes, AHWA remains committed to its vision of keeping the spirit of hockey alive in Mumbai and ensuring that future generations continue to experience the joy, discipline, and camaraderie that this wonderful game offers.
