India’s First Medal at Commonwealth Games 2026

As soon as Lovlina Borgohain qualified for her first medal, it became a matter of confirming success due to the nature of the competition in which she took part in the women’s 75kg boxing event.

This is because the competition comprises only five pugilists, which assures that Lovlina qualified for the semifinals by virtue of the structure of the event. In line with the Commonwealth Games policies adopting the standard procedure used by international boxing organizations, all semifinalists receiving a medal is guaranteed regardless of the outcome of the match in respect of which they only need to compete only once, in the semifinals.

As such, the first medal in the history of Indian boxing is secured by Lovlina without her participating in the quarterfinals.

 

Karnataka Thayi Bhagya Scheme 2026

Karnataka Thayi Bhagya Scheme has been launched by the Karnataka Government for the purpose of safe and sound delivery and childbirth for women who belong to economically sound families. The Karnataka Thayi Bhagya Scheme has been launched by the Department of Women and Children Development and comprises maternity care services that include delivery, medical treatment, transportation, medicines, and checkups that agreed hospitals provide for free and cashless.

The initiative has the potential of control of maternal and infant mortality rates and improve standard of healthcare system. The main beneficiaries of the scheme include pregnant women and lactating mothers.

What is the Karnataka Thayi Bhagya Scheme?

The Karnataka Thayi Bhagya Scheme was started in 2009 and is aimed at granting complete maternal healthcare facilities to expectant mothers from poor families.

The term “Thayi” means “Mother” and the term “Bhagya” means “Future,” thus denotes the vision of the scheme to create a healthier future for mothers and their newborns.

The scheme provides eligible applicants with cashless treatments during pregnancy, delivery, and treatment after delivery, as well as medications, treatment, and transportation costs.

Objectives of the Karnataka Thayi Bhagya Scheme

The main goal of the scheme is to guarantee that every qualified pregnant woman receives good maternal health care without encountering financial difficulties.

This initiative aims to promote institutional deliveries, decrease maternal and infant death rates, enhance prenatal and postnatal care, and offer childbirth services in both state-owned and enrolled private hospitals.

The new law also requires each platform to verify the age of users which shows the increase in the concern about the exposure of teenagers to harmful effects of social media on their mental health, security, and well-being.

 

AI-Powered Bird Sanctuary

Maharashtra is going to open the first AI-powered bird sanctuary of India at Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (TCFS). This will be a remarkable step towards merging artificial intelligence with wildlife conservation. The Maharashtra Government has provided an approval for Eco-Nature Park to cost Rs 45 crores, where the first bird detection and monitoring centre based on AI would be established. The aim of this project is to modernize scientific bird conservation and facilitate eco-tourism.

 

Railway Electrification

India has achieved a historic milestone in its railway modernization initiative with the electrification of 99.6% of its broad gauge (BG) railway network, putting Indian Railways at the second position in the list of the most electrified railway systems in the world after Switzerland. Andy Burnham elected as the leader of the Labour Party. Consequently, he will assume the charge of the Prime Minster’s office by Monday on 20th July, 2026. Mr. Burnham takes over the position from Sir Keir Starmer who resigned form the party last month. Mr. Burnham’s elevation represents a huge milestone in British politics, making him the seventh Prime Minister during the past decade. During the inaugural speech, Mr. Burnham assured the public of the reinstatement of trust in the government and implementation of policies stressing public service, regional development and economic recovery.

 

National Investment Policy for Urea-2026 (NIPU-2026)

The National Investment Policy for Urea-2026 (NIPU-2026) is the latest investment policy brought by the Department of Fertilizers with the aim to promote the establishment of new gas-based urea manufacturing plants in different parts of the country.

The policy intends to draw investment from both private and public sectors by providing a transparent and viable means for establishing modern urea production facilities, replacing the earlier New Investment Policy (NIP)-2012, which expired in the October of 2019.

The main aim of this policy is to increase the domestic urea production along with gradually reducing India’s dependence on imported fertilizers.

 

Government to Introduce Bill Making Insults to Vande Mataram Punishable

Central Government set to preparing to introduce the Prevention of Insult to National Honour (Amendment) Bill by the Central Government during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament scheduled from July 20, 2026. The proposed legislation seeks to make it a punishable offence to insult or prevent the song, “Vande Mataram”, from being sung.

If the Amendment is passed, it will protect the song just like the National Flag, National Anthem, and other national symbols from the punishments of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act. The proposal has already been approved by the Union Cabinet and is going to be proposed in the Lok Sabha.

What Does the Vande Mataram Amendment Bill Propose?

The Amendment bill seeks to amend the existing law of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act in order to impose legal penalties for acts regarded as insulting or hindering the singing of Vande Mataram, the national song of India.

The Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act at present gives protection to various national symbols such as National Flag and the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana.

The bill proposes to add Vande Mataram in the bill in order to provide it with protection under the law from acts of disrespect.

The bill needs to be passed in both Houses of the Parliament and must receive the assent of the President for any violations related to the National Song to be punishable under law.
