Question and Answers:

1 QUESTION

Question is given below followed by two Statements I and II.

Question: a, b, c, and d are positive integers.

Which one of a, b, c, d is closest to the product abcd?

Statement - I: a > b > c

Statement - II: c is not the smallest amongst them.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above Question and the Statements?

(a) The question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement alone.

(b) The question can be answered by using either statement alone.

(c) The question can be answered by using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone.

(d) The question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

ANSWER

Statement-I: a > b > c

We cannot be sure about the value of d from the given statement.

Hence, Statement-I alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

Statement-II: c is not the smallest.

This statement also does not provide any sufficient information to answer the question.

Using both the statements, we can conclude that:

a > b > c > d

Since all the numbers are positive integers, the product of these numbers will always be closest to the biggest number, which is ‘a’ in this case.

Hence, option (c) is correct.

2 QUESTION

Seven friends (four boys and three girls) went on a Goa trip, where they stayed at a resort. The resort had nine rooms vacant, numbered from 1 to 9. First, girls were to choose any three rooms from those numbered 1 to 5 and then boys would choose any four rooms out of the remaining six rooms. What is the maximum possible number of ways in which this can be done?

a) 400

b) 1320

c) 21600

d) 3660

ANSWER

Girls can choose 3 rooms out of the first five rooms in 5

P3 ways.

4 boys can choose four rooms out of the remaining 6 rooms in 6 P4 ways.

[ nPr = n! /) n - r)! [

So, total number of ways = 5

P3 × 6

21600 = 360 × 60 = [! (4-6)/!6] x [! (3-5)/!5] = 4

Hence, option (c) is correct.

3 QUESTION

Consider the Statements and the Conclusions given below.

Statements: H ≤ P < I = T > K; F = P ≤ Y = W > B

Conclusions-I: W > T

Conclusion-II: H ≤ B

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above Statements and the Conclusions?

a) Only Conclusion-I follows.

b) Only Conclusion-II follows.

c) Both Conclusion-I and Conclusion-II follow.

d) Neither Conclusion-I nor Conclusion-II follows.

ANSWER

Conclusion-I: W > T

On combining inequalities given in the statements, we get W = Y ≥ P < I = T

So, no relationship can be established between W and T, as there are opposite inequalities between them. Therefore, Conclusion-I does not follow.

Conclusion-II: H ≤ B

On combining inequalities given in the statements, we get H ≤ P ≤ Y = W > B

So, no relationship can be established between H and B, as there are opposite inequalities between them. Therefore, Conclusion-II does not follow.

Hence, option (d) is correct.
