Media Release

Mangaluru, Dec 10: The department of counselling at St Aloysius Pre-University College, in collaboration with the Buddies, organised a heart-warming and inclusive programme titled ‘Together We Belong’. The initiative was thoughtfully designed to celebrate and support neuro-divergent children, ensuring that every child felt welcomed, valued, and joyfully included.

As the children arrived with their parents, they were warmly received by the organising team. Each child was paired with an assigned Buddy, who gently interacted with them and guided them to the activity area. To begin the day with creativity and comfort, the children decorated Christmas stockings using colourful craft materials specially arranged for them. This engaging activity helped them settle in, express themselves, and embrace the festive spirit.

The programme formally commenced with a prayer song, creating a serene and reflective atmosphere. Sangeeta M Sequeira from the department of counselling welcome address, emphasising the importance of empathy, inclusion, and recognising the unique strengths that each child possesses.

In his thoughtful message, the principal, Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, narrated the inspiring story of ‘The Cracked Pot,’ reminding everyone that although each child is different, every child carries a special purpose and brilliance that makes them wonderfully unique.

Parent representatives then shared heartfelt reflections. Meena Noronha expressed her deep gratitude to the college, the counselling department, and the buddies for the warmth they extended to the children. She beautifully reminded parents that every child is heaven-sent -a precious treasure entrusted to them.

Dr Kanthini, attending for the first time, spoke candidly about the challenges and joys of raising a neuro-divergent child. While acknowledging the moments of frustration, she emphasised the importance of patience, understanding the child’s perspective, and recognising how truly blessed parents are.

Adding grace to the gathering was the presence of Fr Anthony Derrick, campus minister, whose support strengthened the spirit of belonging and community.

After the formal programme, the atmosphere grew vibrant with a lively Christmas medley and dance performance by the college choir and student buddies. The festive music filled the hall with joy, and the children thoroughly enjoyed the cheerful performances.

The excitement continued with engaging games conducted by the Buddies, prompting laughter, enthusiastic participation, and shared happiness. A beautiful moment unfolded when everyone - children, parents, buddies, and staff- joined in for an impromptu dance session, celebrating freely and joyfully together.

A particularly touching highlight was the soulful solo performance by Avni, a special child, who confidently sang a Christmas carol and received warm applause from the audience.

Throughout the programme, the Buddies gained invaluable hands-on experience, deepening their empathy, patience, and understanding. They learned to support the children with care while also experiencing the love, trust, and appreciation shown by the children — making the initiative mutually enriching and meaningful.

As the celebrations reached a joyful peak, Santa Claus made a delightful appearance, personally distributing gifts to each child and adding magic to the festive atmosphere. The programme was compered by Srusty Kamath of II PU, who guided the proceedings with warmth and clarity.

The event concluded with a fellowship meal, where children, parents, buddies, and staff shared food, conversations, and moments of genuine connection - bringing the memorable day to a beautiful close.

This meaningful initiative was led by the dedicated counselling department team - Sangeeta Sequeira, Bakyalakshmi, Sr Valsa C A, Sarah Crasta (coordinator of the event), and Prathik Rai, whose commitment ensured a seamless and heart-warming experience for all. The initiative received heartfelt appreciation from parents, volunteers, and staff, who acknowledged the college’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, compassionate, and supportive environment. ‘Together We Belong’ stood as a powerful celebration of diversity, love, and unity reminding everyone that every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and celebrated.
