MAHE’s 33rd convocation celebrates 1,258 graduates, emphasises innovation & future-ready leader

Mangaluru, May 15: The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), an inst itution of eminence deemed-to-be university, held its 33rd convocation in Mangaluru on Thursday, ushering 1,258 graduates into the next phase of their professional and academic journeys.

The ceremony, held at the Dr T M A Pai International Convention Centre, brought together graduates, faculty members, university leadership, parents, dignitaries and guests in celebration of academic excellence, perseverance and new beginnings.

A total of 1,258 students completed undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes, while 576 attended the convocation in person.

The prestigious Dr TMA Pai Gold Medal was awarded to three outstanding students: Navallpreet Singh Bhamra (MCODS Manipal, BDS), Adeeba Ali (MCODS Mangaluru, BDS), and Chaitra Shenoy U (Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, MBBS batch of 2021–22).

Degrees were conferred by Dr H S Ballal, pro chancellor, MAHE. Addressing the gathering, he said MAHE had evolved from its visionary beginnings under Dr T M A Pai into a globally engaged Institution of Eminence, with a strong focus on academic excellence, research, innovation, sustainability and industry-aligned learning.

He noted MAHE’s expanding global collaborations and developments in areas such as artificial intelligence in healthcare, alongside its growing digital education ecosystem.

“As our graduates step into the next phase of their journeys, I encourage them to embrace lifelong learning, lead with empathy and purpose, and contribute meaningfully towards building a more inclusive, innovative and progressive society,” he said.

Vice-chancellor Dr Sharath K Rao highlighted MAHE’s emphasis on academic rigour, research excellence and interdisciplinary learning, stating that graduates were equipped to meet the evolving demands of the professional world.

He also underlined the institution’s focus on sustainability, including its transition towards renewable energy and continued investment in sustainable infrastructure. Dr Rao added that MAHE’s strengthening research ecosystem, particularly in artificial intelligence in healthcare, was aimed at addressing real-world challenges.

The convocation was graced by Prof (Dr) Sudeep Gupta, director, Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai, as chief guest, and Dr M Shantharam Shetty, pro chancellor, NITTE (deemed to be university), Mangaluru, as guest of honour.

Delivering the convocation address, Prof Gupta said India was rapidly transforming into “Viksit Bharat”, noting that life expectancy had more than doubled since Independence to 72 years, with projections indicating significant economic growth by 2047. He observed that institutions like MAHE would play a crucial role in shaping India’s future by 2050.

He also urged graduates to embrace emerging technologies such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence while transforming healthcare delivery. Stressing the importance of human values in medicine, he called for “epistemic humility” and highlighted the enduring importance of empathy in patient care over algorithmic responses.

Dr M Shantharam Shetty congratulated the graduates and urged them to serve as responsible citizens while upholding MAHE’s legacy. He praised the institution for consistently nurturing skilled professionals who contribute to societal progress.

Senior MAHE officials, including Dr Narayana Sabhahit, Dr P Giridhar Kini and Dr Vinod V Thomas, were present on the occasion.

Welcoming the gathering, Dr Dilip G Naik said the convocation was not only a recognition of academic achievement but also a celebration of friendships, shared experiences and lifelong bonds formed at the institution.

Introductions of dignitaries were made by Dr B Unnikrishnan and Dr Anil Bhat, while Dr Ashita Uppoor proposed the vote of thanks.
