Mangalore, Jun 28: With rains being atypically rare this season and meteorological department predicting drought in the coastal belt, people are turning towards God seeking divine intervention. In one such attempt, a ritual of anointing Lord Manjunatheshwara with tender coconut water, Seeyalabhisheka at Kadri Temple was held on Saturday June 27.

As traditional belief, the devotees of the Lord offered tender coconuts to the temple and the temple priest anointed the Lord with water from the same. After the offerings, the water was distributed among devotees as prasadam.

Temple former trustee Pradeep Kumar Kalkura explaining about this tradition said, there is a belief that offering tender coconuts to God helps bring in rains. In epics too there is a mention about offering of tender coconut water to appease rain God Varuna, who in turn impressed with this offering of the devotees had blessed them with abundant rain, he said.

Mangalore South MLA N Yogish Bhat, who was present at the temple, said that such offerings are a must as every good work of man needs blessings by the God. God is already impressed as it was raining at the time of the offerings, said Bhat. Seeyalabhisheka has been offered to the Lord at the temple whenever it was found that monsoons arrived late or there was scarcity of rain. This year the offerings were organized to eradicate drought and for public welfare, he added.

However, Vishwanath, a resident of Bejai and a frequent visitor to the temple was of the opinion that the offerings no way affected the extent of rainfall for he has been a witness to such offering for some years now. But, I have nothing to comment on a religious belief as the offerings are done as per devotees’ capacity and for their satisfaction. Ultimately it is faith that matters, he said.

Temple trustee A J Shetty, Mangalore City Corporation opposition leader Harinath Jogi and corporator Shashidhar Hegde were present.

You do read books, but as always said, anything in a book can be interpreted any way one wants it. The problem with canned religions is the belief of one God as an entity.

Hinduism, is a way of life, the vedanta and baghwad Geeta is not a book of god like the Koran or Bible. These books were written by scholars at the time. To understand more on Hinduism we need to understand Dharma, or Brahaman which is essentially truth or sathy or light. This is what we can omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent.

If I have to bring it down to several notches for you to understand, take truth, this has to exist, if this does not exist "I" do not exist. False or darkness or whatever you call it, can exist only if truth does not exist .. next you go figure it out. Coming to multiple Gods, it is not similar to a group of superhuman sitting up there waiting for the no 1 super god to give the go signal to open the valve and release rain and this depending on the number of coconuts provided to a temple.

Thus we can say that we are all part of the same "Truth" or "Dharma" or "God" or "Brahama".Since, we are all a part of the same "whole", hurting the other in essence is hurting oneself. That is why we Hindu Indians have the "Namaste" which is nothing but respecting the divinity in you. So it does not matter if I worship an idol or a flower or rain as the "adi" of every thing is the "singularity" or the starting point of the big bang or the ending of the black hole.

God doesn''t distinguish us based on our caste, colour, sex etc.The criteria for judging humans is piety,Righteousness, god consiousness. We all are creations of one Creator. We call him by different names Allah,Bhramha,God etc.If we have done something wrong in this world, we will be punished. It doesn''t matter, to which religion you belong to. From what i understand, you seem to indicate that people who committed 9/11 and other blasts across different parts of the world will not be punished. This is not true.Every soul will have the taste of death and each one of us will be judged based on our deeds.

I have a fair bit of understadning of the hindu scriptures- Vedas and the upanishads. And the vedas clearly says that "ekkam ehdityam" which means there is only one god.And the bhramhasuthra of hinduism is that "There is only one god,not a second one, not in the least bit". In this context, i dont understand where does the rain god come from? Is there seprate god for managing differnt natural phenomenons such as rain, wind etc? can some hindu brothers who are well versed with their religious scriptures clarify?

All religion preaches only peace. Gita is a sacred book but not a book written by God. Before you quote from Gita, the concept of God is dharma.

Edward, Desalination plant requires huge amount of electricity. We cant even meet our regular demands today - How can go for desalination plant? We should focus more on rain water harvesting and re-cycling grey water etc. We also need more dams to hold the rain water from flowing back to Arabian sea.

When Rakshasha the evil threatens to God you ask blessings from God. Man is selfish. First be with God to to destroy the evil then ask his blessings.

LET STATE GOVT. CENTRAL GOVT. TO SETUP DESALINATION PLANT. IN FUTURE THERE WILL BE NOT RAIN AT ALL. DUE GLOBALIZATION, THERE ARE LOTS OF INDUSTRIES ARE COMING UP. DESTROYING FORESTS, BACKFILLING FERTILE & AGRICULURAL LANDS. PEOPLE ARE MORE EDUCATED, LIKE TO MIGRATE TOWNS & CITIES. NEED LAVISH LIFT. BUY CARS, FIX AC''S IN THEIR HOUSE. THEN YOU NEED MORE FUEL, MORE ENERGY.

THIS IS THE REASON WHY NOW A DAYS INDIA IS GETTING LESS RAINFALL & IN FUTURE RAINFALL WILL BE REDUCED. SO THIS IS THE TIME TO GOVT. TO ACT FAST ON SETTING UP DESALINATION PLANT NEAR TO SEA AREA WHERE SEA WATER CAN BE CONVERTED INTO DRINKING WATER.

Dear all, I do not think this has something to do with the wrath of the Gods. This is purely a natural phenomenon. According to a world weather report, this is an El Nino year wherein, there will be deficient rains and this occurs once in a couple of years. The recent cyclone/hurricane Aila has drastically contributed to this dryness. And this is nature showing that it always reigns supreme & one has to respect it.

Nature takes away whatever is taken away from it, but this takes time and human memory is too short. Why don''t we think about what we are doing to the environment especially with the forests and green cover, wild life in the quest for making quick money and unending greed??? It is recommended that a country''s 30-35% of land should be under solid green cover at any given point of time to mantain the natural balance of the various forces, but in India the green cover has supposedly come down to 15% though official stastitics may be showing it to be on the higher side.

These sort of occcurences will become increasingly frequent/common in the future and Man has to be prepared for that. In my opinion, water will become an extremely scarce commodity in the years to come and future wars will be fought for water. Can you imagine, the ground water is slowly drying up and one has to go more and more deeper to get water. It is high time remedial measures are resorted to like rain water harvesting and increasing the gren cover, protecting the remaining forests to prevent catastrophes.

It is pertinent to note that even the late pop singer was disturbed with issues like global warming and increasing environmmental damage and was in the process of writing a song on the environment just before his untimely death. Jai Ho Nature, we respect you. Cheers!!

Dear Soumya/USA, please try to understand the basics of any religion. All religions preach only peace. If there is lawlessness and mockery of God''s laws, God punishes. He doesnt send rains, causes earth quakes, then floods, storms, tsunami etc. In the Geetha, its clearly written that all calamities are due to the displeasure of God. I request you to understand your Geetha first, Science and Tecnhology cant find a answer or solution when God comes down heavily on us.

Why are we here only talking about happenings in Managloare. Do you think GOD happy with 9/11, Bombay Attack, London Attack, other millions of suicide bombings all over the world killing only but only innocent civilians. Atleast in Mangalore no one was killed. What say Mr. Shahnawaz Kukkikatte. Please do not give undue importance for such small happenings in Mangalore which is done by a handful of goondas. Let us mangaloreans not tarnish the image of our own motherland.

Mr. Ravi, God is with us but are we with God? Do we follow His teachings.... no.. we fight each other on religion, caste issues.. we attack churches, demolish Mosques, and this is the ultimate result. Come on we the children of God. Grow up, love each other, help each other.. then only God will pour His blessings on us.
