Kasargod: Multi-linguistic School Bears Testimony for Unity in Diversity

Kasargod: Multi-linguistic School Bears Testimony for Unity in Diversity

Daijiworld Media Network - Kasargod (SP)

Kasargod, Jun 24: Here is a school that has imbibed and perhaps, surpassed the multi-linguistic culture of the district. Come to the municipal town government upper primary school in the town to see for yourself the example of unity in diversity. The school houses students who speak twelve different languages and study many of them too. It is apt that it is located in Kasargod district, where people speaking in different languages live in.

The district has always come to be known as a confluence of people from all parts of India. As the district borders Karnataka, a big chunk of the people living in the district follow the culture and traditions of the coastal Karnataka and even now, scores of people make a beeline to Mangalore for commerce, education and health services. Kasargod also has a sizeable NRI population.

Kasargod municipal upper primary school teaches Kannada, Malayalam, Marati, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Konkani, Urdu, Tulu, English, Sanskrit and Arabian languages to its students. Even so, there are students whose mother tongue is different, but they have chosen to study local languages Kannada or Malayalam. The school is nearing its centenary celebrations now.

The school looks like mini India, with people from various backgrounds and mother tongues studying together. Another school which can be compared to this school in terms of languages taught, is Bovikkana UP school where students learning Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Arabian, Konkani, Marathi, Hindi, Telugu, Kodava, Tulu, Sanskrit and Tamil languages are studying in a single class. There are also a few other schools in the district, where as many as seven to eight languages are being taught.

Kasargod, being a multi-linguistic region, it is possible the natives in general as well as the students of that particular school may speak half a dozen languages including English and Hindi. However, it''s hard to believe that 12 languages are taught in the Municipal U.P. School, particularly when mention is made of languages like Tulu, Konkani & Kodavu since these languages are yet to be introduced in schools.

While Sanskrit, Urdu and Arabic may be taught as optional languages there is no reason why primary school children should learn Marathi, Telugu and Tamil which are quite distant to the region.

It is very nice to read the news about multi languages in schools. My sincere suggestions to daiji is to cover this district also as the culture of the people is same as S.canra and Karavali especially north kasaragod. As the people of kasaragod and south canara are more genius in handling different languages like, hindi, kannada, malayalam, tulu, tamil, urdu, english, arabic and beary malayalam. I really enjoy this in gulf when I deal with different people. Thanks to my native place with "unity in diversity" - great Indian culture... with different langauages, religion, festival, season, food, colour skin, temple, mosque, church and many more...........

Most interesting part is not the number of languages they claim but the people who studied with the bare minimum facilities proudly claim that they are the product this humble but great school. Guys I  salute you.

Being from Kasarag I know this school even though I have not studied there. It is opposite to Sri Mallikarjuna temple. Like some others commented, I too have a doubt whether Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, etc is taught. I know there are lot of tulu speaking people like me, but I still have doubts whether they teach tulu.

Clarification: Daiji, please confirm the truth of this news.Kannada, Malayalam, Sansktri & Arebic are taught here as optional languages. Nobody teaches Marati, Telugu, Tamil and all in Kerala. It is not a central school- but a small school from 1st to 7th standard.I have also studied here. Just like any other coastal belt, Kasaragod has people speaking many languages and teachers & all speak all types of languages as mother toungue. FYI, there is no Govt school anywhere where they teach Tulu or Kodava.

Very Interesting,I request CM of KA to visit this school and learn something importance of languages and think about the schools in Karnataka teaching only Kannada which is not useful outside Karnataka or India and Yeddi could not arrange jobs for all within the state.

Though it is too much for the students to learn so many languages during their academic career, If the students have the zeal, I am sure by introducing couple of foreign languages will help the students to take up higher education and jobs abroad once they pass out from such schools.

I have read this article elsewhere that there are students who speak 12 languages. No doubt it is remarkable. However, I have my own doubt whether all these languages mentioned are taught there. Can anyone clarify??

Mr. Sham Bhat, I appreciate your efforts & school life. The message shows that definitely you were a dedicated & hard working student. Now, it is almost a memory for all the students who have studied in such atmosphere. Presently most schools are in good condition, & their might be many people in our country who have gone to a good position, starting from such schools.

Vow !! This is the school where I studied. This is a Govt School & having a blend of teachers & kids speaking Kannada,Malayalam,Tulu,Arabic..you name most of the languages spoken in earst while Madras province!! Adjacent to this is one more maginificient school named BEM School which celebrated its 100 years recently. It is the evalengelistic missionary school erected during the British time.I remember every class room of these 2 schools.

Opposite to these schools is the age old Shiva temple which celebrates its annual function starting at the right last day of final exams. For kids, end of school means Jaatre time. My class room of 1st std did not have any walls in early 80''s. The ''Thatti''woven with coconut leaves it self made its four walls.!! During day time, it used to be the school & for nights, it used to be the shelter for destitutes.

Overall, I will carry the sweet memories of this wonderful place life long!! Thanks Daiji for this short article & photo too.

Dear Editor...Please refer last paragraph..."School looks like mini India, with people from various backgrounds..studying" ..My question is what is mini India ? You give impression that as if school is in Pakistan ? Big mistake. Kasargod is in Inida and Upper Primary school shows real face of United India and not mini India. Pleas don''t ignore my comments.
