Udupi: Internal differences between Swamijis of eight Maths pour out into open

Udupi, Jun 10: The internal differences between different Swamijis of the eight Maths associated with Sri Krishna Math here came out in the open on Monday June 9.

Repair and renovation work of Lord Anantheshwara and Chandramouleshwara temples standing amid the eight Maths has been undertaken, initiative relating to which was undertaken by Sri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji of Puttige Math. It is said that the Puttige Swamiji sidelined six Swamijis in doing so.

The Puttige Swamiji however, told the media persons that he had personally met all the Swamijis on this issue and that they had not opposed the idea of renovating these ancient temples. He rued that these spiritual heads of Maths had been now opposing the renovation work for no apparent reason. "Lord Anantheshwara Temple is very old, even dating back to much before Sri Krishna Math was established here. Wood used for the construction of this temple has become brittle and weak. Therefore, the temple is being renovated, and work has been taken up," he added.

As Puttige Swamiji heads the management committees of both these temples, he thought it right to renovate the temple, roof of which has been leaking since sometime.

Sources said that Kaniyoor Math Swamiji attended meetings organized by both the sides, and chose to play his cards safe. Sri Vishwapriyateertha Swamiji of Admar Math was absent. The other six Swamijis heading Shiroor, Pejavar, Krishnapura, Palimar, Sode and Admar feel slighted by the overbearing zeal of Puttige Swamiji.

Puttige Swamiji has been in-charge of Lord Anantheshewara and Chandramouleeshwara temples since the last two decades, and there are rumblings within the Maths about management of these temples. While the other Swamijis seek equal right in administration of this temple, Puttige Swamiji is reluctant to meet this demand.

The above temple falls under the department of Hindu religious and charitable endowments department, and the government has released Rs 4.5 crore for its renovation. Interior works began at the temple on Sunday, and works outside are being attended to with police protection. The other Swamijis rue the fact that Puttige Swamiji has been showing autocratic behaviour, by overlooking opinions of other senior Swamijis. Both the temples have good income, and have assets worth crores of rupees. The other Maths feel that the Swamiji is not agreeable to share power with others with an eye on assets of the temple.

Now, the six Swamijis who are opposing temple renovation work without their nod, have given power of attorney to a third party. On their behalf, a petition has been submitted in the district court here against the renovation works. The court has taken up investigation, but the Puttige Swamiji has gone ahead unperturbed, without bothering about the legal wrangle. He is planning to complete renovation work at the earliest. In all possibility, a stay order may be issued to the ongoing renovation work in three to four days, sources feel.

The grudge of other Swamijis centres around the fact that Sugunendrateertha Swamiji has not taken them into confidence before undertaking repair and renovation work of the temple, and obtained from their suggestions and opinions. He knows about their specific objections on the issue, they assert. They feel that these two temples fall under the supervision of all the Maths and therefore, every Swamiji has a right to get involved with decision making process concerning renovation, and express their opinion over these works. At the same time, no one is sure why Puttige Swamiji wanted to take up renovation work in such a tearing hurry.

Sri Krishna Math is a religious centre where total devotion and service to society should prevail above all other petty issues. Everyone is aware that there have been differences between the spiritual heads of different Maths on various issues. But the Swamijis, who apparently are detached from worldly pleasures and attachments, need to hold open discussions in a healthy atmosphere and sort out issues without taking the fight to the streets, devotees opine. Because conflicts give rise to confusion in the minds of the temple and various stories get floated, and the image of this internationally famous religious centre is likely to take a beating, if they give prominence to their individual egos instead of universal good.

I would like to know, how Puttige math got the administration power of Anantheshwara & Chandramoulishwara temple. Anantheshwara temple was built much before Krishna temple. These eight math has been created by Madhwacharya to administer Krishna temple. That is nothing to do with Anantheshwara temple, then how come they got the administrative power.

Very interesting. The crux of the matter is every math wants share of the income from this temple.

Ultimately what ever they preach the actions says very loudly that everything is business.

Danda hein Bhai danda hein. Everbody is after power, money and fame. But in different ways.

THIS IS A PECULIAR ISSUE RAISED BY SWAMIJI'S WHO NEVER DO AND WILL NOT ALLOW OTHERS TO DO.
IT WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO TAKE OTHERS INTO CONFIDENCE AND DO THE WORK BECAUSE ONE OR THE OTHER WILL RAISE SOME PETTY ISSUES OR THE OTHER.
SO IF ANYBODY IS LEADING IN A PARTICULAR WORK IT IS OTHERS TO FOLLOW HIM AND SUPPORT THEN ONLY PEOPLE LIKE LEADERS IN ANY GROUP.

Sri Krishna had it easy during 'Dwapara Yuga' during his Avtaar....
In 'Kaliyuga' he too is finding the going tough......
His 'Geetha's interpretation is done in a thousand ways by all and sundry but the simple message which he wanted to 'put across' through it is not caught!!
Everyone seems to be fighting in his name!!!
Moreover there are some in this 'Kaliyuga' who claim to be his 'Avatar's' which even he is blissfully unaware of...!!!
Kaliyuga has hardly started and all this ruckus and hatred which has crossed all limits!!! Sri Krishna only knows what more is in store!!!

These type of internal politics is common in all religions. After all Swamy's, Father's, Maulvi's etc are one among us. Only thing is that they are the people who always advise people about these things and now its upto them to solve these things internally. No other comments as I respect all religious heads irrespective of caste, creed or religion.

Puttige Swamiji has always had a good image and he is a man with a vision. He has the good of the Hindu community in his mind and he has deep concern for values... I wish the other Swamijis were to follow his good example rather than resort to mean tactics of opposing good work in the name of not being consulted...

    It's internal matter..
    Will be solved amicably..
Lord Anantheshwara and Chandramouleshwara temple are very old.. and may be some reason not to be renovated.
    Without reason nobody object.
Even to enter inside Garba Gudi of Lord Anantheshwara is very difficult having small entrance.
May be swamiji of other mathas objected while renovating the temples it will loose it's original sanctity which uphold from so many years.

Our Indian people totally messed up. In politics actually there is no need of religion but mix religion into politics and make dramas. Where there is no need of politics in religion but religious leader make it a political issue. The people should understand the politicians should not bring religion into their business and religious leader should not bring politics into their holy work.

Dear GM….first time I agree with you….but question is which Party is immune to religious mingling!!! When all Party knows that majority community of India is divided between Congress and BJP then they via for minority with some religious issues. It’s started with CONGiss and now followed by BJP too. But I think people like you and me…always part with one Party and keep on writing comments but many of us never went for voting!!!!!

Dear Mr. Shetty, i agree with you,its not good for a society that these religious leaders come out in open with their differences. It creates sort of disrespect to their own image in front of devotees. Now as they have come out in open with their differences they should talk to the community leaders and sort out their differences without going to the court of law. It does not make any good to society by going to the courts. I feel it makes the matter more worst. They should keep the devotees in their mind.

It's very easy to say 'Sri Krishnaarpana Masthu'...
'Sarvam Krishna Mayam' and the like....When in reality it is 'Sarvam Aham Mayam'....
dropping the 'I' or the ego is not easy folks.
It does not come that easily....
It is very easy to preach and I have found that out...
