Tel Aviv, Jul 25: In a major breakthrough, Israeli security forces have foiled a deadly terror plot inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS), arresting three young men from eastern Jerusalem who were allegedly planning a large-scale attack on security personnel in the capital.
According to a joint statement by the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) and Israel Police, the suspects— all in their 20s — had been radicalised through extensive exposure to ISIS propaganda online, including graphic videos of executions and war-zone violence.
The trio reportedly intended to carry out an attack using a car bomb, firearms, or even an explosive-laden drone at a checkpoint in eastern Jerusalem, authorities revealed on Thursday.
The Shin Bet disclosed that the first arrest was made several weeks ago, during which officers uncovered a firearm and ammunition concealed inside a sock at the suspect’s residence. Two more suspects were later apprehended as the investigation unfolded.
"Driven by ISIS ideology, the suspects meticulously planned to inflict maximum casualties on Israeli forces,” said police officials. “They examined multiple attack methods and had begun preparing accordingly.”
Investigators also found that one of the accused had already started acquiring weapons with the specific goal of “killing Jews”. Moreover, the group had reportedly started learning to assemble explosive devices and was in direct contact with ISIS elements in Judea and Samaria for operational training and instructions.
The Shin Bet further stated that the suspects had aspirations to travel to Syria to receive formal combat training and officially join ISIS ranks. Their digital trail showed attempts to obtain weapons and training manuals for launching attacks within Israel.
Authorities said the timely arrests have averted what could have been a devastating terrorist attack. The case underscores ongoing threats posed by homegrown radicalisation and highlights the critical role of intelligence efforts in safeguarding national security.
