Mangaluru, Jul 26: In a move aimed at enhancing flight safety and maintaining cleanliness, authorities have issued directions to remove water tanks and waste units located in villages near the Mangaluru International Airport.
A meeting was held on Friday between officials of the Airport Authority and representatives of the village panchayats of Kandavara, Gurpur, Paduperar, Ganjimath, and the Bajpe town municipality. The discussions focused on ensuring safe take-offs and landings, as well as environmental cleanliness in the surrounding areas. During the meeting, it was directed to remove structures that could potentially disrupt flight operations.

Due to the accumulation of waste, bird activity has increased in the area, posing a threat to aircraft. Therefore, authorities stressed the need to maintain cleanliness. In light of recent air accidents, the Airport Authority emphasized taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of aircraft and airport operations. Bajpe town panchayat chief officer V D Shanthala and others were present at the meeting.
Coconut trees near Eshwar Katte under Paduperar gram panchayat, and water tank atop a tall building in Sooralpadi, Ganjimath area will be cleared, and a solid waste unit near the old airport at Kolambe will be relocated.
Support for CCTV installation
When panchayat officials suggested installing CCTV cameras to identify and act against those dumping waste, airport officials assured full cooperation.
Additionally, issues related to rainwater runoff from the airport hill were brought to attention by the Bajpe town panchayat and Kandavara gram panchayat officials. In response, the airport authorities assured that steps would be taken to address the problem.
