Udupi: Banana storage centres raided, chemical use detected

Udupi, Aug 20: Officials from the Food and Health departments conducted raids on three to four banana storage centres in Alevoor, Udupi, following complaints regarding the use of chemicals to artificially ripen bananas.

The raids were conducted by Kundapur assistant commissioner Rashmi, along with officials from the Health Department and Food Department.

During the inspection, officials reportedly detected the use of harmful chemicals to accelerate the ripening of bananas. Artificial colouring agents used in the process were also seized.

Cases have been registered against those found using harmful chemicals to artificially ripen the fruits. Vehicles allegedly used for the activity were also seized by the officials.

Further details regarding the quantity of chemicals and other materials seized are awaited.

    Probably this could be the same case with the PAPAYA FRUIT too. Ripe papaya used to be very soft but nowadays, it has been noticed that even the ripe papaya getting hard to chew. This has been observed around Udupi area.

    I read about Ethephon on internet and it says it is Plant Growth Regulator ... widely used in agriculture as well as Banana ripening all over the world.

    When demand increases and supply cannot meet the demand due to certain reasons, people play some scrupulous way of easy ways without due care towards people's health. There are other natural ways to make fully grown fruits ripe them by ensuring certain amount temperature by covering with hay or cover with some substances like bags. Olden days forefather used to make use of loft or closed rooms to generate natural temperature increase. Those days are over. Presently only money making business.

    Good job and many such raids are the need of the hour: - Local markets - Meat Shop to check the feed quality that is given to animals/chickens - Fast Food outlets to check oil usage and colouring. - Restaurants wherein Mayonnaise Cheese or Butter is adulterated or expired.
