Udupi, Oct 6: A severe infestation of black-headed caterpillars and red palm weevils in several parts of Udupi district has added to the woes of farmers who are already struggling due to inadequate rainfall.

Coconut trees in several areas of Kundapur and Byndoor have been damaged by infestations of black-headed caterpillars and red palm weevils.

Farmers say the pests, which feed on the tender shoots of coconut trees, are destroying the trees. They said that although the district received continuous rainfall last year, coconut trees were not significantly affected by pests. However, the infestation has increased considerably this year.

The black-headed caterpillar infestation is severe in Attikone, Padukone and other areas of Hadavu village in Byndoor taluk. A team of experts has already visited the affected areas, inspected the situation and provided guidance to the farmers.

Farmers said the red palm weevil infestation had begun affecting coconut saplings as early as April. As hot and dry weather continued thereafter, the infestation intensified, they said.
