Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (KR/EP)

Udupi, May 23: “Complaints of atrocities are being received repeatedly from senior citizens on them. Udupi district administration is bound for their safety. Out of 133 complaints received in the helpline number at Udupi DSP’s office maintained by the government, 109 cases are disposed of through the personal advisor of the center and justice board,” said Udupi district senior citizen’s welfare officer, Chandra Naik.

Solutions by the district administration: “The petty quarrels that begin for the family property by the family members escalate till assaults on helpless senior citizens. The personal advisor at the center calls both the members of the family and senior citizens and tries to sort out the disputes. Legal suggestions from the negotiator appointed by the district administration are obtained whenever necessary. If the problem does not solve, investigations are held in the justice board formed under senior citizen’s nutrition and protection Act and imparted justice.”

Who can complain: “Complaints can be registered by the senior citizens if their fixed or movable property is looted, if they are harassed without food and medicine and sent out of their houses as those will be considered as atrocities. There are complaints that senior citizens are unaware of the appropriate legal Acts even after 13 years since those were formed. They can contact helpline number 1090 or contact the office of the human rights foundation office situated at Udupi’s Vaikunta Baliga Legal Institute.”

“Discussions were held on the subject in detail in the recent meeting chaired by the deputy commissioner. The DC has directed to hold awareness programmes in this connection at taluk level and panchayat level. Dr Ravindranath Shanbhog, the negotiator appointed by the district administration will give details of the Act in the meeting.

There are also complaints of unauthorized old age homes cheating senior citizens. A meeting will be held under the leadership of the SP of all the old age homes in this connection,” said Chandra Naik.
