Mangaluru: Duty-consciousness & sincerity of saviour of 173 lives go unnoticed

Daijiworld Media Network -Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 26: The pilot of an Air India flight with 173 passengers on board, which had left the international airport here on Thursday, had to resort to emrgency landing soon after take off because of the failure of one of its engines. The pilot of the aircraft underwent trauma momentarily on account of unexpected emergency and frantic cries let out by passengers who were fearing for their lives, it is gathered.

It also has come to light that the company had asked the pilot to take charge of another flight the same night, but he refused as he was yet to come out of the shocking experience he had gone through earlier in the day.

From the moment the pilot sent message to Air Traffic Control here within 30 minutes of takeoff that the aircraft was returning to the airport for emergency landing, emergency was sounded all over the airport. This was the most serious emergency landing at the airport here and messages were dispatched to district administration, police officers, and others asking them to be in readiness to handle unforeseen emergency. All the four fire tender units in the airport were kept in readiness. Ashit Singhe, who was piloting the aircraft, was taken aback at the wails and cries let out by passengers who were scared of losing their lives, it is said.

The pilot showed exemplary composure and courage, apart from exercising control over his senses, and without showing any anxiety, safely landed the aircraft here, bracing the risk of oil spill from the failed engine, risk of the aircraft moving away from the runway on account of wind pressure, and chance of the second engine stopping functioning immediately after touch down. Everyone agrees that this was the best safe landing witnessed here.

It is surprising that the pilot, who saved so many lives by doing everything perfectly, and turned a savior for 173 passengers, has not got appreciation or recognition for his exemplary duty consciousness, calmness and ensuring the safety of his passengers. Airports Authority of India, district administration, other organizations etc have not come forward to hail the pilot for his effort.

In the meanwhile, there is information that a new engine has been dispatched for being fitted in place of the defunct one for the aircraft that remains parked in the hangar of the airport here. In all possibility, the engine will reach here by truck from Thiruvananthapuram by Thursday and the aircraft may be ready to soar to the sky again in one or two days thereafter.

The following is lungi news -
    1. Signal turning into red from green during emergency landing. If this is the case then the flights need to be fitted the the signs "Horn OK Please" & "Caution Air Break" at the back of the aircraft.
    2. The single working engine failing after emergency landing. Boeing 737 has an ETOPS of 180 minutes. Engines won't just fail just because of emergency landing.
It's really courageous of the pilots to pilot the aircraft & do emergency landing with single engine, but this has happened with Air India 777 earlier from US to India where the one of the two engines failed due to birds flying into one of the engines during take off. It was more difficult case than engine fail during cruise.

    Poor Air india Express,
Serving a triangle piece of bread, potato chips worth 5rs, a small cup cake, and a black tea/ coffe for international travellers as lunch or dinner.
This is common even after several hours delay.
Such a quality service itself explains to their staff to limit expectations
Hats off to Pilot and Support Staff for a wonderful achievement.

Kudos to Captain Ashit Shinge for his heroic landing of the aircraft in the midst of chaos on board. To think technically, taking into consideration the safety of passengers, recalling all the training he had gone through and landing the aircraft safely is not easy. It needs to be recognized due to two reasons - all passengers walked out safe and sound with zero injuries and the aircraft itself was saved from any damage. I recall two incidents in the recent past . A Jetblue airline landed in Los Angeles with the landing gear stuck at 90 degree angle. Infact, he had to circle the airport couple of hours to burn the fuel. It was unbelievable landing with no injuries to anyone. The Los Angels Mayor personally came to meet the passengers and recognize the heroic landing of the pilot. The second one was the landing of aircraft on frigid Hudson river. The captain Sully, (Sullenberger) was hailed as a hero for saving all lives.

Are these pilot trained for such eventuality? Yes. training apart, when it comes to reality, I will not be surprised. if the Pilot himself chickens out, as he too is facing the same danger as everyone else. In both cases, the pilots were hailed as Hero's and yes they should be.

So, what is wrong with us in India? Is this our culture? Hail thugs, corrupt to the core politicians, cheats as hero's and real hero's doesn't even receive an acknowledgement? Shame on our culture, our politicians and all those who should have taken note of this achievement of saving lives and assets.

In fact there is no place for duty conscious sincere people like the pilot who saved 173 valuable lives. Prominence and award is given to do all sorts of nonsence things. But no recognition to this pilots category. thats the tragedy.

First of all hats off to the captain athish shinge, his landing was commendable. We being on the flight never thought we will be landing this safely. The touch down seemed forever. The screams and the cries still haunt my ears.
We are here alive today because of the pilots calmness and quickness in taking actions.
Words are not enough to thank the captain . He is worth an award.
He shall remain in our prayers and hearts forever.
SALUTE TO CAPTAIN ATHISH SHINGE .

Really surprising! I wonder why there had been no word from the Minister of Civil Aviation or the MP or MLA who are frequent air travelers. The pilot had avoided such a big tragedy, that too involving our national carrier and saved 173 lives. I am sure at least the concerned minister is aware about this averted tragedy. Is this a frivolous issue to these people?

Since there is no loss of property or life, usually manager at air India thinks that captain has done good job. Doing that job is a part of his duty and minimum expectation from all the pilots... So do not expect anything from aviation department....

But local administration can facilitate him since passengers are our local people...

Its indeed a great effort from the captain. Only those who go through such ordeal will understand it. His organization may not have recognized what he has achieved . There are plenty of well known organizations across Mangalore to take up this responsibility to facilitate the Captain and his entire crew . I have experienced this fear in 2012 over Muscat airspace once and i personally know the hardships a captain goes through during emergency situations.
There are a lot of public functions across Mangalore organized by well known personalities.. Any one of them can come forward and facilitate the captain and crew.

Hats off dear Capt. Ashit Singhe, you are the savior for these 173 passengers and crew on board this IX flight. If you have not been applauded by your seniors and your company it only shows their attitude to your successful duty bound commitment. You have done your best and rest will be Blessed by God and those many who were saved.
Difference would have been major if only there was any politician on board, hype would have been different. God forbid if something else happened - say even a Tyre burst you would have been taken to task, inquiry would have been conducted and what not. This is how our systems work & I am sure you are used to it as you are of this since you are working with a Govt system.
What does a human life cost to our Govt officials is what is shown in this incident or they are unaware of the out come of an engine failure as circumstances of the situation.

Appreciate the presence of mind, daring decision and execution of required action at right time. Hat's off to you Sir. Ashit Shinghe, you are really a great personality and savior of 173 people. God bless you. It is heartening to know that your valiant efforts and action went unnoticed. God might have definitely taken note of it. But, I request the Airport Authorities and particularly the Air carrier to have a gesture to appreciate and honor in a most possible way.
Friends, in this time where humanity and humility is deteriorating day by day, when someone does some good act, we need to have heart to acknowledge their contribution. Applauds. My sincere thanks. Why not a few of the travelers think of honoring him?

This is the second case I read of Air India. Before this somewhere in US airport Air India flight to Mumbai caught fire just after take off. Pilot Immediately shutdown the engine and successfully landed heavily loaded aircraft with one engine and saved more than 300 lives. That thing also got unnoticed. May be Air India is following Modis dialogue as "mann ki baat" don't publish and spoil our name.
