Mangaluru: Air India Express flight to Doha suffers engine failure mid-air, returns to airport

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Sep 21: In a mid-air scare, a flight from here to Doha on Thursday September 21 evening developed engine failure within 45 minutes of its take-off and had to return to the Mangaluru airport.

The flight Air India Express IX 821 was carrying over 170 passengers to Doha.

Confirming the incident, Mangaluru airport director V V Rao said that one engine of the aircraft failed a little half an hour after departure at 5.35 pm, due to which it had to be flown back. The flight landed safely, he said.

He also said that alternate arrangements are being made for the passengers on the flight.

A passenger who was aboard speaking to daijiworld said that when the engine failed, there was a 'loud bang' and the passengers panicked.

"Exactly 45 minutes after take-off, the engine failed and the flight came plunged down with speed. If we had flown another five or ten minutes we would not have survived. Some of us thought the flight exploded."

Another passenger said, "A little after half an hour of take-off, there was a loud sound. At first we thought it was thunder, but came to know it was engine failure. Thereafter the flight turned around and we landed safely at Mangaluru airport."

Sources said after the engine failed, the aircraft lost its height and balance all of a sudden, and was vibrating throughout on its return journey till it landed. Most of the passengers were too shaken to narrate the experience in detail. "We are grateful to the pilot that we survived," they said.

The passengers appreciated the pilots and the crew for handling the situation and bringing them back safely. Some of them even took selfies with the pilots of the aircraft.

As per sources at the airport, the passengers will now be flown to Doha on the morning of Friday September 22. However, some of the passengers, too shaken from the incident, said they were not prepared to travel by flight again so soon.

The airline is making hotel arrangements for passengers who are from far off places, said sources.

Message regarding the incident has also been conveyed to Doha airport.

Rakshith Naik, who was one of the passengers aboard, told daijiworld that he was travelling to Doha with his wife and daughter. "When the plane suddenly plunged, we thought our end had come. Everyone started to cry and pray."

He also said that he has taken accomodation for the night in a hotel, where other passengers are also staying. "I think half the passengers do not want to go in tomorrow's recheduled flight. Air India is making arrangements to refund their airfare," he said.

This is not the first instance of engine failure...
There are records of aircraft going down after pilot erroneously switched off working engine instead of problematic engine.

In this case we need to appreciate pilot for following correct procedure...

While it was undoubtedly scary for the passengers, aircraft can safely fly on one engine. pilots are trained to fly the aircraft under such conditions. Pilots went to lower altitude that is appropriate for flying on single engine.

Thank God passengers were brought down safe from super pilots with present of mind.Looks like may be a bird was caught in and the engine failed immediately. With the sound ,most probably so happened .otherwise so soon after take off engine cant fail ,afterall they check before.Important is all are safe and no injury to anybody. If engine was defect, pilots will notice signs first.

I think it was pure engine malfunction...
At the height of 30,000 feet no birds will fly...
So moral of the story is " always fasten your seat belt"

    Sri,

Mostly this could be a bird hit...when birds are sucked into engine they make sound...Plane had engine trouble within half and hour of take off ....perhaps birds were sucked into engine at lower altitude...

Agree with you no birds at 30,000 Feet altitude....

I believe Rita could be right here...Also she is from Belman and appears to be my senior...so I have to agree with her...Sorry...

Rita , no birds fly at that altitude and engine failed after 45 min. It is turbine blade broken. Please note along as plane keeps on moving above stall speed it will be up in air but once speed decreases it goes down. We should thank GOD to give such pilots that has done good job saving everybody.

The pilots job is really commendable even though the aircraft's can fly safely even with one engine. In these kind of situations the landing has to be perfect, as I believe with single engine the speed cannot be reduced much, as reduced speed during landing requires more power, which is not possible with single engine & it needs lengthier runway to cope with more speed. Recently Indigo which is also a budget airline overshot the runway at Mumbai which has a lengthier runway & I believe went beyond the runway and stopped in mud. Think what would have happened in M'lore in this case. This did not became a news except for the fact that Jet to Dubai was cancelled from M'lore. I hope M'lore airport runway is extended at the earliest. I'm not sure how come the budget of ₹16,000 crore for extension got reduced to ₹4,000 within a matter of few months. Is the later budget for extension of safety area beyond the runway?
