Mangaluru: Failure in exam, burden of expectations led Srinivas college girl to suicide

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Updated

Mangaluru, Jun 2: The student of Srinivas Engineering College who ended her life on Thursday was overcome with guilt at not being able to live up to the expectations of her parents. Suchethana (18), had committed suicide after finding out that she had failed in one subject in her first semester examination, because of this overwhelming feeling. This was revealed in the suicide note she had left behind.

In her suicide note addressed to her parents, the teenager confessed that she was feeling that she had let down her parents by failing in a subject in her very first semester. "I am very much fed up. You have spent lot of your hard earned money on me. Please pardon me for taking this step after making you to spend so much. Although I was expecting good marks, the result made me feel dejected at my very existence. I have taken this decision, as I do not have the courage and confidence show my face to people," she stated therein. In a line addressed to her younger brother (Appu), she asked him to look after her parents well.

Suchethana, who belonged to Hangaravalli in Chikkamagaluru, had arrived at her college from her hometown after learning that the first semester result was to be published on Thursday. After finding in the college that she had failed in one of the subjects, she directly headed to her hostel room. She poured out her pain at having failed in the examination after joining engineering college in spite of hailing from a poor family with some friends whom she met there. At around 10 am she went into the room and closed the door. Between 10.15 am and 12 noon she hanged herself by using the veil of her dress from a fan.

Later, she did not respond when other students of her room called her over phone. Repeated knocks on the door too did not get any response. Later, her hostel mates informed the warden who arranged to open the door forcibly to find that the girl had committed suicide. Her body was handed over to parents who had come from Chikkamagaluru after postmortem.

It is gathered that Suchethana, who was eldler of the two children of her parents, is survived by parents and a younger brother who is studying in Moodbidri college.

The first semester examination result of Visvesvaraya Technological University had been published after five months due to various problems faced by the university. The examination fee had been doubled and was to be remitted for second semester during June, giving tense moments to poor students. District president of Campus Front, Athavulla, who noted that students are losing lives because of the wrongdoings of the university, warned of renewing of protest by his organization in a different way. It may be recalled that Campus Front had recently led a protest against non-publication of result and various blunders in announcement of results by the university.

Girl made a big mistake. So stupid decision.....its because of our society.... Nabours and relatives are very much interested in marks than parents. They wish lower marks for others and they enjoy the movement they comes to know the marks of others...... I don't understand why we Indians go on depression just by scoring lesser marks. Life is beyond exam marks. Exam. Mark is just a part of life... Not a entire life. Parents should not expect much from their kids. I have seen many parents discuss with others regarding studies, marks, degrees, job, promotion, salary, etc. Etc. Why the hell they do this. Why our society is so greedy....

Whether such a hard and tough decision of suicide is taken on ones failure or presuming its an insult. The students should be properly guided and given counselling in the beginning itself. by doing so the expectations and dreams of parents are shattered. what a tragedy ? RIP.

May her soul rest in peace. She should not have taken such extreme step which will hurt her parents more. Failure should be considered as a ladder to success. Everybody in life fails one time or other in life .

Am a student too even I have failed in exams but everytime I still hope to do better in coming exams.... My dear fellow students nothing wrong if we fail in exams, committing suicide is not a solution for that... Naw see it is a loss for parents not for the person who committed suicide nor to the university... What was Thomas Edison??? A drop out from school but then he was the inventor of bulb... So please stop ending your life.... My friends god has given us only one chance so live to the fullest extent and just donot take hasty decision....

RIP.My prayers to the departed soul and family of this beautiful girl.
There is no failure, its an illusion.Every one may not be able to meet the imaginary set standards of the academic studies. Are they failures? Not at all.We all are winners, thats why we were born, got this beautiful life.Stop writing fail, stop naming fail, instead say ITS NOT YET THAT THE SET STANDARDS OF THE EXAM MET. No one is a failure, first understand this,if a child suicides then the school is a failure, family is a failure, society is a failure, education system is a failure.

Our Education system is a biggest failure. It stresses on the marks and exaggerates that the student's life will be successful only if they get good percentage.
And Parents blindly believe our education system and force children to get good grades.

Wake up parents! Exams is NOT everything. Prepare your children for Life, not for exams. Teach them the life skills and social skills and encourage their unique talents and help them choose their passion and support them to achieve their goals and watch them being successful.

RIP young woman...A precious life is lost..very sad..

Youngsters these days need to understand that Marks is not everything in Life.. Its about smartness and hard work later on that what defines your life and goals. If marks were what to decide one's fate, i should have ended my life long back... I have failed in most of semester back in my engineering days , but took it positively, worked smart and today I have earned a good place in my career and well settled in USA. Trust me, after some years, nobody will ask you how much you have fared in your PUC or Engineering exams, All they would see is how smart you are and How confident you are take up challenges.

How many of us remember what we scored in 5th std or 8th std? In the same way over the years, marks are nothing but numbers , But what really matters is how strong you come back after a failure.!

Parents on the other hand should be the source of strength during this critical period and must learn to catch depression tendencies of children. Many schools put their ads 100% pass. In one such school my cousins son was studying and I came to know later that weak students who are unlikely to pass 10th std are actually asked to leave the school in 9th std itself so that only good students remain and therefore 100% pass. Imagine having hospitals who ask their patients to vacate in case they think chances of survival is low so that they can put a ad 100% alive.

This is the fact of India. The very same people who impart education have not faced the real world. It is like you learn karate in a air conditioned class and then leave the student to fight with street fighters. Experience is the biggest education of all. A cook who works in the neighboring caterer is no way less than a Chef and that too without any hotel management degree. A fisherman has a Phd in his own field. There is no school in the world that can make you a cricketer, a politician, a singer etc and if there are they just want to extract your money as that is also a business.

Students in 10th and thereafter are forced to take tuition that there are no Sundays or Festivals only study. Some parents are compounding the problem who go to the extent of joining their children and staying in lodging during this entire coaching period. This is a serious problem and schools must take notice of it and encourage children to take part in sports or leisure activities for a certain number of hours so much that the student must feel I have played enough today so let me also study a bit now.

I hate competition, comparisons. Teens think there is no hope if they don't perform in exams. In fact failures become more strong human beings later in life. Today's world doesn't make it easy just because one is a topper. There are so many other factors. Better to aim at acquiring good knowledge, academic as well as non academic and if you want try new adventures after some years of experience.

This is an indication of needless expectations placed by society and the resulting pressure faced by many students to do well. If parents/teachers (yes, I m talking to you!) can take credit for your success, then why not take credit for your failure as well.

There is whole life ahead to overcome failures and then laugh at these failures later. Quickly dust yourself off, learn from these mistakes, take responsibility and move on. Do not indulge in self-pity (the most destructive emotion) or shame. Instead, show yourself compassion and kindness.

Failure is a transient phenomenon, not a steady state phenomenon. Do not tie your self-worth to such setbacks. These will most likely have little to no impact on the course of your future. What is more important is to learn from them and quickly move on! If you haven't failed yet (or thought you haven't), you WILL fail at some point in life. Just do not lose your head over it.

Many in the forum are blaming the parents. When I was in College over 25 years back even at that time there was heavy pressure. Generally the pressure builds in 10th std. Since there are students who perform differently, students who are average generally feel being left out in case they do not do well.

About myself while in 2nd PUC I remember one of the lecturers saying only those who don't do well in 2nd PUC continue doing college rest go to professional colleges. Actually this builds pressure as young minds thinks that is the only way out.

I also remember a ad in TV couple of years back wherein one bespectacled student goes to another student in the college library and shows a new college brochure and says in a Goats voice 'Mei isi college jahoonga' and rest of the students also say 'Mei bhi' like a goat and blindly follow that boy until the first boy falls and so the rest who followed him. This is the problem. When we are 15 or 16 years old simply do not know what we want to become and are worried about the future. The problem is we think that our daily bread can come only when we study well get good marks and work for some company. This is not true.

If one carefully analyses in most of our families our parents and our uncles and aunties actually had only basic education but over a period of time they excelled in their respective professions and prospered in life. Some joined companies learned the art of doing work and climbed the ladder of success by being self employed and becoming prosperous. In fact, I would say even when you join as a apprentice there is so much to learn out of life. Most of people have a tendency to change their profession that is totally different than what they studied. I have seen Bcom students become software engineers after doing some course and Software engineers running a poultry.

She should not end her like that. It is a challenge for her learn more in life. She can rewrite her exam. It is just a exam of our studies. Every parents should encourage their children, not to compare with other nor bother from the blames of society. Now they won't give our child life back.

    RIP!
This is the end result of parents wanting their wards to do engg just because they others r doing it! There r so many seats available that various colleges r vying with each other to fill vacant seats!

Engg gained prominence after IT industry started offering fat paypackets to even freshers, so irrespective of specialisation majority would opt for IT jobs coz ofat pay packets!

Indian IT industry has completed the boom cycle n in severe downtrend! Recent report in TOI said that they expect 1.75-2 lac job losses/year for next 3 years wiping out 50% of work force due to advancement like cloud computing, AI, big data analytics etc! So engg has lost demand for those seeking jobs in IT industry!

Regarding the university concerned, a recent article in DH claimed it to be one of the worst managed universities; in fact a few corrupt professors were caught while manipulating from fail to pass during revaluation!! It's mired with many other controversies!

Parents should encourage children to take up professions for which they have n aptitude n passion for; today any profession has scope to excel if the child has passion for it!

Scoring high marks by roting does not make them knowledgeable or intelligent!!

This is an eye opener for other parents to NEVER force them into a profession they do not like!!

Our education system is so bad. My son passed CBSE 12th. People are more worried than me to know my sons result. Trust me first they call and talk general then they somehow come to my sons results. I just told he passed, immediately they ask %. Trust me why they want to know the % of my son. Even he is failed its not their problem. I told all those who asked the % is 35%. I enjoyed their reaction.

Please people Success is not just %. Its we how we fare in our life. Bigger the % higher the pressure, Next year some one will leave you behind in this race and you will be depressed.

I pray for the soul of this young lady.

I think its high time colleges/schools educate the students on value of life more than value of education.
Marks... grades .. the temporary measurement metrics of a persons calibre is not worth more than the person himself/herself.
First year of engg is very tough.. all cannot cope up with it. It should be made mandatory to assign mentors(lecturers) to every new student who needs to be coached for his/her stay in the college.

    Dear Readers,

Its very disturbing to hear students committing suicide for such reasons even there are multiple chances to clear the subject in coming semesters .
I feel its duty of every college management to have a guidance program for all new batches before college starts . They need to morally support all students from every background . Many students will be staying in hostel for the first time and have depression very soon for all small reasons, its the duty of all managements and teachers to have a session and make them strong enough to face the life bravely and not to take these extreme steps ....

    RIP...

Parents need to be more considerate towards their children. Must communicate well that marks dont matter and a good happy life is important. Parents in india have always been driving their children to excel and consider failing as a shame on the family. People who have topped in exams are seen being useless to the society and ppl without education have also been seen dedicating their life for others. We as parents have a profound duty to raise our children to become good ppl and not to become high scoring robots. A fact tht no one can deny is tht, if the parents are open to their child's feelings and support them morally , these kind of incidents can be avoided. Childern who have the support and understanding of their parents will have the strength to face the worst in life... Rest in Peace...
