Union Government Approves Second SEZ for Mangalore

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (RD/MB)

Mangalore, Jul 15: Mangalore, Termed as the second commercial capital of Karnataka, is now becoming the darling of Major investors in the country. Strategically located along the west coast, the region is expecting huge investements.

Union government has approved one more SEZ besides ONGC SEZ in Mangalore on Friday Jul 13.

Union government SEZ Approval Committee has given the final nod for setting up another SEZ here.  This has drawn the curtains on the controversies related to SEZ.

Bangalore-based Kinfotech Software Private Ltd will be the another company which has been approved to set up IT-based SEZ. It would set up Information Technology Oriented Services (ITOS), at the proposed Export Promotion Industrial Park (EXIP) on 25-acre plot at Ganjimath on the outskirts of Mangalore.  It is the fourth proposed SEZ in Mangalore.

Despite Mangalore SEZ being considered a multiple-products SEZ, only local based industries will be set up.  Final nod has already been granted for ONGC Petrochemical and Petroleum Complex.  The project would cover 1500 acres while Rs 300 crores will be invested.  The project would be implemented in phases.

Union environment department has alredy given a green signal for the project.  The SEZ-related notification will be issued in a month's time.  The process of setting up the project begins later on, sources stated.   PM Manmohan Singh's arriving to lay foundation stone for the proposed ONGC Petrochemical Comnplex has been confirmed.

IT Park: Infotech Software Private Ltd has applied to set up IT SEZ in Ganjimath EPIP. Karnataka Industrial Development Authority has sanctioned 25 acres for setting up IT Park.

The local industrialists seem to have opposed the project initially citing the reason that industrialists within the district were not given due preference, with others getting the benefits.

Thumbay group of companies has been already developing an IT park.  Infosys will be setting up IT Park at Kambalapadav near Mudipu.

Kanara Entrepreneurs Ltd (KEL), a forum of UAE-based NRIs, has come forward to invest in the proposed SEZ in Mangalore.  They have submitted a proposal to set up SEZ in a plot of 180 acres at Shakti Nagar, on the outskirts of Mangalore for which they have secured final nod from union government.

Bharati Shipyard has also expressed its interest in investing at these SEZ' besides another two companies.

The SPECIAL EVASION ZONES or SPECIAL EXPLOITATION ZONES - are created so that the taxes could be legally avoided and labour laws can be easily circumvented . When the concept was in its infancey our FM Mr. Chidambaram was very vocal in almost all forums that such Zones will cause a drain on the exchequer to a level of Rs.1.75 lakh crores in the next decade and the financial regulator RBI had strictly advised the Banking Sector to consider the advances to the same as loans to Real Estate.

But nobody knows what transpired later the FM is silent and RBI softened its stand. May the potential in acquiring farmers' land at throw away prices and alotting to the near and dear ones must have appealed to all the political parties. It is surprising that even Big industrial houses if they invest in these SEZs need not pay taxes.

Now it is anybody's guess as to how much black money is generated in India and the more SEZs the more opportunity to evade taxes. Our country has no money to take even 1000 crores to spend on roads and water suplly. We dont have 100 crores to subsidise education of merit students. The Tax at Source on common mans bank deposits starts at a paltry sum of Rs.10000/- which means we the Government wants us to believe that they are starved of resources.

But the same governments are ready to forego Rs.1,75,000 crores. The eight wonder of the world is the so called left parties who take out processions on silly issues, the Janatha Dal which always swears in the name of farmers, the BJP which always was vocal as champions of the middle class are quite comfortable with this and also party to it. If someone dreams that India will progress rapidly with SEZs then it is ones prerogative to do the day dreaming.

I have not gone to the pros and cons of the Special Economic Zones, but something tells me that they will ring a disastrous consequences to the country. Only time will tell. The biggest beneficiaries of these SEZs are the Ambanis, who are basically businessmen with eye for big money and these two brothers, I wonder if they have any business ethics or patriotism for the country.

A lot of agricultural land, etc. will be used up for their and other speculators' venture. Countless villagers will be left high and dry and vast tracts of agriculture lands will be used to enrich these people, who are already filthy rich beyond comprehension. If Bill Gates is very, very rich, no one complains simply because, considering his wealth he leads a life of simplicity and ploughs back billions in various charitable and philanthropic causes.

I wonder how many politicians and babus will get hefty bribes for allotment of land for these SEZs. These are the people, who will stoop to the lowest level to enrich themselves and their families. I simply ask Daiji World readers, whether India needs a microscopic few trillionaires and billionaires and a majority who are not assured of two square meals a day.

Is this a sort of India we require or an India where all the citizens enjoy a decent standard of living, where their basic and reasonable needs are met and disparities in wealth that are a far and few apart? The present scenario is a BIG, BIG recipe for disaster that could lead to big problems. This is certainly not a good scenario and the consequences will be disastrous is just an understatement. We have in front of us, French, Russians Revolutions and other revolutions.

In India, we need a sort of prosperity where the disparity of wealth between the haves and have nots is not much. We do not need people who are unbelievably filthy rich and a multitude living in utter poverty.

What a fantastic news about the future scope for Mangalore thru plans and programs that are going to sprout as a result of SEZ expansions. The economic outlook will be broadened with scope for expansion in so many infrastructure facilities added with opportunities for educational, technological, social as well as cultural progress all over Mangalore. Our grand children as well as our great grand children will reap the harvest so long as they are prepared to work hard and dedicate themselves for the cause of human progress.

Everyone has a role to play, because it will bring positive impact on each and everyone of us. Every segment of the society in Mangalore will have a part to play in the private as well as public sector involvements, while there is always a room for politics and politicians to voice their opinions. This is where democracy plays an important role in the daily progress of Mangalore as well as India.

Let us therefore remain focused on all future growth and prosperity of Mangalore that will benefit each and everyone of us far and near.
