Basel, Jul 3: Norway’s Ada Hegerberg led a spirited second-half fightback as her side edged out hosts Switzerland 2-1 in a thrilling Women's Euro 2025 opener on Wednesday at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, despite missing a penalty.

Switzerland dominated early proceedings and opened the scoring in the 28th minute through Nadine Riesen, who struck home after a chaotic defensive moment from Norway. But Hegerberg, the all-time top scorer in the Women's Champions League, levelled with a well-placed header off Vilde Bøe Risa’s corner in the 54th minute.

Just four minutes later, pressure from Caroline Graham Hansen led to a costly own goal by Switzerland’s Julia Stierli, handing Norway the lead. Hegerberg had a chance to extend the margin in the 70th minute after Géraldine Reuteler was penalised for handball, but the Lyon star sent her penalty wide.

Switzerland, eager to respond, were awarded a penalty shortly after, only for it to be overturned following a VAR check for offside. Reuteler had earlier rattled the crossbar in a dominant Swiss first half.

“It was a strong talk at halftime. You know we have high standards in the team,” said Norway coach Gemma Grainger, praising her side’s turnaround.

Swiss coach Pia Sundhage, calling her current role her "biggest challenge," appeared dejected as her side missed out on what could have been just their second win in Euro history. “There’s such a small difference between being successful and not,” she said post-match.

Despite the loss, fans stayed back to cheer the home team in what was a spirited opening to the tournament. The match followed a modest yet elegant opening ceremony that showcased Swiss culture, including tributes to its famed clock-making and Alpine beauty.

The game, held at Switzerland’s largest stadium, also set the tone for what promises to be a competitive and emotionally charged Euro 2025.
