Calcutta HC orders Mohammed Shami to pay Rs 4 lac monthly alimony

Kolkata, Jul 2: Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has been directed by the Calcutta High Court to pay a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lac to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan, marking a major legal development in their long-standing dispute.

Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee ordered the pacer to pay Rs 1.5 lac towards Jahan’s personal maintenance and an additional Rs 2.5 lac for the upbringing of their minor daughter. The judgment came in response to Jahan’s appeal against a 2018 Alipore Court ruling that had awarded her a much lower amount.

At the time, Jahan had sought Rs 10 lac in monthly alimony but was granted only Rs 50,000 for herself and Rs 80,000 for her daughter. In her appeal, her lawyers argued that Shami’s financial standing could support a higher payment. His income tax filings showed an annual income of around Rs 7.19 cr, or nearly Rs 60 lac a month.

Taking this into account, the High Court found the earlier order inadequate. “A sum of Rs 1.5 lac to the wife and Rs 2.5 lac to the daughter is just, fair and reasonable,” Justice Mukherjee said, adding that Shami may contribute more voluntarily towards his daughter's future needs.

The court also noted that Jahan, who has not remarried and lives alone with her daughter, deserves adequate financial support, especially considering the star cricketer's substantial earnings.

Shami and Jahan were married in 2014 and had a daughter in 2015. Their relationship soured in 2018 when Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and match-fixing. She also claimed that he had stopped providing financial support.

In 2023, Shami shared an emotional Instagram post after reuniting with his daughter Aaira. However, Jahan dismissed it as a publicity stunt, saying the meeting was only to get his signature on her expired passport and accusing him of refusing to fulfill his daughter's personal requests.

The legal order now ensures structured financial support for Jahan and her daughter, bringing a degree of closure to a prolonged and bitter battle.
