BHIM app introduces biometric UPI payments for faster, PIN-free transactions

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Mar 24: NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL), a wholly owned arm of the National Payments Corporation of India, has rolled out a new biometric authentication feature on the BHIM Payments App to simplify digital transactions.

The newly launched feature allows users to authorize UPI payments of up to Rs 5,000 using fingerprint or facial recognition, eliminating the need to enter a UPI PIN for smaller transactions. This is expected to make payments quicker and reduce transaction failures caused by incorrect or forgotten PIN entries.

Users can access the biometric option across a range of everyday payment activities, including transferring money to contacts, scanning QR codes at merchant outlets, and making online purchases.

Commenting on the launch, Lalitha Nataraj said the initiative is aimed at enhancing ease of use without compromising security. She noted that biometric verification links transactions directly to the user, ensuring both convenience and protection.

The feature also strengthens security by keeping sensitive biometric data—such as fingerprints and facial recognition—stored locally on users’ devices, thereby reducing risks like PIN sharing or unauthorized access.

For transactions exceeding Rs 5,000, users will still be required to enter their UPI PIN, adding an extra layer of security for higher-value payments.

The biometric authentication feature is currently available on both Android and iOS devices that support fingerprint or face recognition, marking another step forward in making digital payments more seamless and accessible across India.
