Beltangady, Jan 21: In a significant development in the Dharmasthala village skull case, skeletal remains recovered during an exhumation operation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) at Banglegudde have reportedly been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Bengaluru for further legal and scientific examination.

According to sources, a total of seven skeletal remains were unearthed at Banglegudde during the SIT’s operation conducted on September 17 and 18. Earlier, an eighth set of skeletal remains found at the site had been identified as belonging to a man from Kodagu district. While most of the remaining skeletal remains are believed to be those of men, their identities could not be established at the time. The ongoing forensic examination at the FSL is expected to ascertain the identities of the remains.

Meanwhile, in connection with further proceedings in the case, the SIT has submitted a report to the Beltangady court. The court has directed the SIT to file its final report. In this regard, the next hearing has been scheduled for January 23 at the Bantwal court.

During the hearing, the SIT’s counsel is likely to either present submissions related to the final report or seek additional time for its completion, sources said.

It is also learnt that details pertaining to the skeletal remains recovered during the exhumation may come up for discussion during the next hearing. However, it remains uncertain whether the FSL examination report will be available with the SIT before January 23.

Notably, the court had earlier instructed the SIT on January 3 to submit its final report, lending added significance to the upcoming hearing, sources added.
