Mangaluru: Light House Hill road renamed after Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 23: The Light House Hill road, popularly known as Bavuta Gudde Road among the locals, was officially renamed on Wednesday September 23 as 'Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road' in honour of the great banker from Mulki, who headed Vijaya Bank, guided it to great heights, and provided employment to thousands of young people from the district.

The stretch of the road between Ambedkar Circle to Catholic Club via Light House Hill will henceforth be known as 'Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road'.

In a function held next to Syndicate Bank at Bavuta Gudde at 9 am on Wednesday in which several dignitaries took part, the road was officially named after the erstwhile illustrious banker by city mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar.

The mayor unveiled the board bearing the name ‘Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road’.

After the inauguration, guests released balloons and carried out a march on Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Road till Ambedkar circle.

Founder chairman of International Bunts Welfare Trust Sadananda Shetty, president of district bunts Nadavara Mathr Sangha Ajith Kumar Malady, BJP district president Sudharshan Moodbidri and others were present.

The city corporation here had approved a proposal to christen this road after the late Shetty but because of objections, the high court had ordered status quo on May 24, 2017. The court, which heard arguments and counter arguments and received petitions in favour and also against the proposal, disposed off the case by ordering the state government to review its earlier decision and take a suitable stand in the matter. The city corporation commissioner was asked to send suitable proposal to the government after taking into consideration petitions received from people who had appealed against the earlier decision. The commissioner, who reviewed the same, had expressed the opinion that the road can be named after Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty. The government recently took a decision to withdraw the status quo order and permitted to rename the stretch of the road stated above as 'Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road'.

Vijaya Bank's current and past employees had strongly supported the idea of renaming of the road in honour of Shetty and pooled popular opinion.

In Google and Wikipedia it is clearly mentioned that Mr.Attavar Balakrishna Shetty (.A.B>Shetty) was the founder of Vijaya Bank (23.10.1931) What more proof you want? Now the office bearers of Vijaya Bank Employees Association and other BJP/Sangh Pariwar leaders, Mayor of MCC and others have to give an answer to the Citizens of Mangalore.

I am an ex employ of Vijaya Bank. Its a known fact that Vijaya Bank was founded by 5 agriculturists headed by Mr.Attavar Balakrishna Shatty in 1931. Later Mr. Sunder Ram Shatty became the Chairman of the bank for many years. There is A.B.Shetty Circle named in honour of Attavar Balakrishna Shetty, the FOUNDER of Vijay Bank. Then why did Vijaya Bank Employees Association hide this fact from the public? Inorder to mislead the public and play dirty and shameless politics? Will the media expose this? Will the office bearers of Vijaya Bank Employees association answer to this?

This proves education is more important and we have elected scoundrels and good for nothing people. MCC main aim is to rename roads and not to maintain the roads. Pathetic.

That is ok; They could not save the bank; at least let them be happy to see the name of 'Vijaya Bank' in that board. By the way, as Mr Sunil has put rightly put it, no one travels in that direction; so also, nobody goes to Vijaya Bank now; they all go to Bank of Baroda... and the reply is Barodchi.. People of undivided South Canara are slowly but surely moving towards co-operatives.

Sorry to burst your bubble Yogesh, but you’re delusional if you think we’re going to be a superpower any time soon. Mr Modi and his team have done some good things (IBC, GEM etc) some other good things they have tried to achieve but with limited success, (the new GST) and there have been quite a few significant failures (demonetization, appointment of Nirmala Sitaraman as FM) .
We lag significantly behind many other countries -not just countries like US, UK, Japan, Germany, China, but also smaller countries like Finland, Sweden, Israel and South Korea-in technical know how & innovation in many areas.
Our demographic dividend threatens to become a demographic nightmare due to the inability of our PM ,even before Covid struck, to keep his promise of creating more than 2 million jobs a year (excluding selling pakodas ofcourse).
I could go on, but I don’t want to strain your brain so I’ll stop here for now.

How would u feel if we would change the name of any road with a Hindu name to a Christian name. Although we can't as the people voting are either illiterate or blind who is just following the ideologies and also nobody give a shit about Vijayabank owner or whatever . Either remove the rights of being a Christian and just tell to buzz off . Why should we pay road taxes for these names of people who I don't care about and and not interested at all.

Vijaya Bank workers' union might have succeeded in renaming the famous Light House Hill Road but miserably failed to stop the merger of Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda of Gujarath. What an achievement! What a celebration!! Some jobless people are always want to be in the news! I wish Viajaya Bank workers' union should start protesting about the illegal constructions of the buildngs, parking areas converted into commercial shops, pathetic condition of the roads without footpaths in the heart of the city of Mangalore. District administration and the concerned department should put a full stop for renaming the roads and circles in Mangalore.
Believe me Light House Hill Road, Jyothi Circle, Pumpwell Circle, Lady Hill Circle will be known by their original names and not by the new names! Vijaya Bank Workers Union should come forward to build new bus shelters and toilets at Jyothi Circle , Pumpwell Circle, Kankanady and other places in their name. It will be a boon to the general public.

    No more vijaya bank
    Bank of baroda only;
So better to rename it as gaekwad instead of sundar rao.
People are forefront to rename but cannot save the vijaya bank.

Better rename some roads which are in a pathetic condition as gundimarga, pothole road, substandard road etc. No proper drains for rain water to flow in many areas and in places where drains are built, they are just for show. There is no scope for rain water from roads to enter these drains. Our concretised roads resemble mini swimming pools when it rains.

The State Government, Mangalore City Corporation and the District Administration should have taken wise steps in naming ST., ALOYSIUS ROAD as there was a display in the compound wall itself inbetween KMC Medical College and the Syndicate Bank compound wall. It was clearly showing years and years before. When I See Today the evidence as:

    ================ "ಸಂತ ಅಲೋಸಿಯಸ್ ರಸ್ತೆ" ================

was erased/removed by these Communal Fundamentals.

The State Govt., of Karnataka have a Chief Minister and 3 Deputy Chief Ministers who consume & enjoy irresponsibly in peoples taxes.

THE LITERATES HAVE KEPT A BLIND EYE AND DEAF EARS ON ADMINISTRATION OF KARNATAKA AS WELL AS TO THE CENTRAL.

Karnataka Govt., is busy in Cabinet Expansions rather than tackling Economy and Coronavirus.

Is the District Administration taking revenge on the Lady-Hill Circle re-naming as Narayana Guru Circle???!!! And there after finding objections from Public deferring for the time being

The Central Govt., is busy in making:
    1) Un-Imperative Farm Laws.
    2) Busy in Sushanth Singh Suicide case.
    3) Constructing Parliament Building and Statues.
    4) Chinese have occupied India’s Finger point Land
    5) P.M, Modi is issuing statement that no Chinese soldiers inside Indian land.
(Later the statement is removed from govt’s., official papers)
    5) Doklam is occupied by China
    6) PSU Banks are drowning at the behest of govt’s apathy.
    7) Demonetization was a Greatest Mismanagement.
    8) Foreign Trips became waste. FDI never rolled into India.
    9) Richest man Baba Ramdev’s Loan’s were written off.
    10) Busy building Gau-Shalas & Aadhar cards to Cows
    10) Thousands of farmers and Business-Men lost business and have committed Suicide. However the Govt., is behind Sushanth Singh Suicide case.

Every Indian knows Central Govt., is the sole hand in gloves in destroying India’s Economy.
-23% GDP and the Govt., makes sympathetically innocent statement “An Act of God”

PRIOR TO THE CORONAVIRUS, ECONOMY OF INDIA WAS IN SHAMBLES

MCC can officially rename as many roads as they want, but it will only count when we Mangaloreans use the new name for the road. As of now they have only named a stone on the Light House Hill Road. Lucky Stone, it got a name!!!

Of course it would have been a proud moment and I would have deemed it a great achievement had they retained the name of Vijaya Bank also.

These people could not retain the name of Vijaya Bank. What's the use of naming a road after his founder when his contribution has been wiped out.

The future generations will not even know there was a bank called Vijaya Bank. Still I will appreciate if these people have the guts to rename Bank of Baroda as Bank of Mulki & Baroda, considering Mulki as the birthplace of erstwhile Vijaya Bank.
