Mangaluru: Following protest, J R Lobo's letter, govt stays renaming of St Aloysius road

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jul 1: Hours after the students, staff and the management of St Aloysius Institutions staged a strong protest against the renaming of the St Aloysius College Road as Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road after the former chairman of Vijaya Bank, the state government on Saturday July 1 ordered a stay on the matter.

The move comes not only in response to the protest by St Aloysius Institutions and alumni, but also due to a letter written to the state government by MLA J R Lobo, urging the government against the renaming.

In his letter dated July 1, 2017, J R Lobo had stated the road has been known by the name of St Aloysius College road from past several years. "St Aloysius College has a history of 137 years during which Jesuit priests have been imparting education to youngsters without any discrimination of religion or caste. The students who have passed out of this institution have achieved highly in various fields. Before renaming the road as Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road, neither the college nor the public was informed, but according to the Mangaluru City Corporation, it has followed the due the procedure of law.

"Vijaya Bank has shifted its head office from Mangaluru to Bengaluru. Even the building that was first established by Vijaya Bank does not lie along this road. Sunder Ram Shetty belongs to Mulki where there is a college and a building in his name," he contended.

"The move to rename the road has hurt many people of the city. An atmosphere of unrest has been created. There is a need to find a peaceful solution to the issue. I urge the government to bring a stay on the renaming of the road and the order issued to this effect on May 5, 2017, so that a meeting could be convened with the district in-charge minister and suitable solution could be found," Lobo urged.

In response to the letter, the state government has taken serious note of the matter and issued a stay on the order to rename the road until further notice.

Government should inquire why MCC took a decision to rename SAC Road without taking consent from ST Aloysus College? not even consulting/informing SAC?

Whether any corruption is involved in this matter? Did MCC take a bona fide decision or was there any consideration involved?

Thanks to Lobo Mam;s last minute brinkmanship.
Right from the beginning people were growing concerned over this drama.
Why they wanted MSS name on SAC Road, why not some other road in Mangalore.

Govt should not concede to the request to Vijaya bank's management gimmickry and rather be allowed to rename a building or road elsewhere or a village after him.

I thank all those involved in this peaceful protest, i was one of them and it was not in sync with good feelings of people of this beautiful town.

Vijaya bank people should have realized this long ago.....they lost faith/trust of people and their brand equity eroded as part of this selfishness.......Vinasha kaley viparitha buddhi...

Some old syudents who studied at St.Aloysius and now practising as Advocates should have acted upon about this issue to bring a stay order from the Court. But now at the last moment J.R.Lobo, our MLA has acted upon promptly to bring stay order from Govt. at the nick of the moment . He has done a commendable job both to the College and to the Society. Hats off sir for the great work done by you in this regard Let the Vijaya Bank Union staff try to get another Road. Why they want this Alosius road only. Any dearth for roads. Select another one.

It is very surprising that our MLA came into SOS mode at the last moment! This is the result of the widespread, across all sections of society, fully justified, objections posted in the media n the peaceful protest march by students; or else, the renaming would have taken place w/o any hitch! This shows that unless the common man does not collectively stand up n raise his voice against injustice, wrong decisions, or important matters which concern the welfare of the Aam Aaadmi, nothing will happen as the authorities seem to be in a neutral mode for obvious reasons! This renaming saga reminds of the "Jallikattu" protests held across the country and the subsequent speed with which the ban was negated by the authorities in a matter of days!!

Anyway, people r happy that a right n just decision has now been taken!!

Very good outcome from a sticky problem. Thanks and congratulations are due to Mr. JR Lobo.
Now is the time to move forward. Let us not talk of winners and losers. It could be turned into a win-win situation if we work soberly and in harmony.
As I had pointed out in an article in Daijiworld, the claim of the college seems to be based on the premise that possession is nine tenth of the law. It should now be reinforced by going through the formalities so that the matter is de facto as well as d jure.
The way forward has been pointed out by scores of readers in response to Daijiworld’s coverage on the subject. I would suggest that the road sign for Mr. Shetty be started at the eastern gate of the Regional Office of the bank, with two intermediate signboards in front of Jyoti and on the edge opposite footpath and two more each at either side of the road at Bunts Hostel Circle.
The College road signs should be where the road forks out opposite Catholic Club and on the Southern side of the road opposite KMC Hospital buildings at the Ambedkar Circle end .
Thanks to Daijiworld for the sober, and neutral handling of this issue. Let goodwill and wisdom win. Let us conclude with Shakespeare that “All is well that ends well”.

Light house has disappeared long ago, yes as a bunt, I am proud of the great contribution of Mr. Sundaram Shetty, not only in placing the Vijay Bank among the leading banks of India and also helping thousands of Mangaloreans in their quest to improve their life. None of these achievement can stand before the contribution that Jesuit institution of St Aloysius has given to millions of students over a period of 137 years. Probably every student who has walked out of the portals of this great institution, will proudly proclaim himself as an Aloysiusan. As such I stoutly support retaing the name of this great institution for the road starting from Jyoti talkies to Hampankatta

Mr. Sundar Ram Shetty himself was a student of St. Aloysius College, so as so many others who become internationally known for their strict discipline, ethics and morals taught to them by the selfless Christian priests -- the JESUITS. I am also an alumni of SAC and what I am today, I am indebted to them besides my parents. It is not the college degrees that make you great, but the real education that includes discipline, morals, and virtues.

I studied in SAC during 1997-2000 and the road was known as St. Aloysius College Road starting from KMC Hospital till Jyothi. I never knew about Vijaya Bank till today. The other approach to the St. Aloysius was from Court Road.

There should be clear guidelines for renaming of the roads. I really wanted the road name to remain the same for ever. There should be proper guidelines for renaming of the roads and no one should not face the similar situation again. SAC is a temple of education and hope it will continue to do so forever. My father studied here and I would definitely send my kids given a opportunity.

For his work he deserves honour but it is not necessary to remove the name of St. Aloysius College Road and replace with the name of the entraprenuer . There are many other Roads in Mangalore City, Mulky and other prominent places in Dakshina Kannada. Select one of that and rename it. Anybody the present generation knows who is K . S. Rao (Road). It is time now to change the name of100 years older roads in the city not the 25 - 50 years old name roads.

In Mangalore St. Aloysious College is and has been more prominent than Vijaya Bank.

Ramesh, Lobo is always awake! You should wake up MP's of the district to good work for DK!
End of the day it is a fair decision by the government to stay the renaming! Most People from all wakes of life were against the name change just because of what SAC stands for! JRL's letter is self explanatory. Hope people those do this kind of work by hoodwinking public learned a lesson! I guess some people got exposed!!

I support the suggestion that an enquiry should be conducted as to who all were involved in getting the May 5th Order was passed and also the entire process leading to it should also be scrutinized. Surely some sort of kumbakonum must have taken place and corrupt officials and political entities must have been involved to get the obnoxious Order to be passed. Get at the bottom of all this and take appropriate action against those responsible.

During childhood it has been knowing as Aloysius college road. No point of changing road name. Majority of Hindus will not support it.

It was known as Light house Hill road. Even in postal. Just check the hoardings in the full stretch. It all says LHH road. I guess Aloysius road is the one linking LHH to SAC next to the Mosque. In records , I am not sure what's the name . Some seniors still call it Bauta Gudde.

This great Institution I studied from 1967 to 1972, has imparted education to all without caste and creed. Nice to be part of that institution as it commands respect in the outside world. I too salute Mr. Sundaram Shetty of Vijaya Bank. Great dedicated Soul. The order of the State Government to the stay the renaming of the Road after intervention of Mr. J. R. LOBO is highly laudable. Thank you Mr. Lobo. Jai Hind.

The name of light house did not send you to Calgary, the school which you studied sent you to Calgary. College will remain there forever but not your light house.

Public infrastructure such as road, bus stand, airport should be named after public figures...those who worked for the general public without favouring caste or creed.
