Mangaluru: Aloysians stand united in peaceful protest against renaming of road, call for support

Mangaluru, Jun 29: The students and staff of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) staged a big protest against the renaming of St Aloysius College Road, in the Eric Mathias Hall on campus on Thursday, June 29.

Hundreds of students were present with placards, voicing their dissent.

The protest also took to social media, where pictures and feeds converged on instagram with the hashtag #SACroad.

"Mulky Sundararama Shetty, who was the managing director of Vijaya Bank has indeed contributed a lot toward the development of the bank. During his tenure, many people got jobs in the bank. He is instrumental in obtaining jobs for scores of people from this district as well. His work has been commendable, without downplaying his achievements, the change called for, in this case, is unjustifiable. The stretch of road from Ambedkar Circle to Bunts Hostel can be named after him. Around 1970, Light House Hill Road was renamed St Aloysius College Road. Recently, we went with a compromise proposal, but the union vouching for change rejected it. Many local MLAs and MLCs also supported the government and corporation without enquiring with us, and gave the change in road name a go signal. We will have to take stronger measures to restore the prestige of the college," said Richard Gonsalves, vice principal of the LLR block in the college, expressing deep hurt by the staff members, students, and management.

"I was impressed by two placards by students, about this being 'not just about the road, but the respect you give to St Aloysius'. We are not making society and the government responsible for naming the road after institute. But asking them whether the change from its current name is justifiable. Former students must join hands to fight this," urged N G Mohan, former president of SACAA.

Democracy and technicalities

"This move is elusive to democracy. This sort of democracy does not give you opportunities. The police say that we cannot protest. But we are holding peaceful protest within the campus, so why not? They speak of technicalities. They ask where is the record. This institute was started in 1880, and the corporation asks for records. Speaking of technicalities, where was the MCC 40 years ago? It was just a municipal office. And yet they ask us for records. There was a press conference by Vijaya Bank too, recently, asking if there were any records. The Jesuits came to the Light House Hill Road 137 years back. It was a barren land then, on which they created a sea of humanity. Jesuits' innumerable sacrifices for the institution are being sidelined by the politicians who only profess their own list of works. This is a good farewell message too for students that 'one should have a value based life for everyone else sake'. The change of road name has been strategically placed on a Sunday, but we will show our strength in numbers through former students, staff, families of students against this. Let us not depend on a minister or MLA, but strive together for the cause. The stretch was, is and will always be SAC road," said Dr A M Narahari, registrar of the college.

Student president Aman gave an electric speech on what the institute meant to him as a student, one among the generations of students, who has been enriched by the institute. He demanded respect where it was due. Students together chanted the three magical letters 'SAC' in a powerful chorus, ringing loud and clear, the sound of protest.

Fr Dr Praveen Martis, principal of the college concluded, urging students past and present to join in the protest without fear, to keep the honour of the institute, and to uphold natural justice. This momentous struggle will be etched in the history of the institute as of one the great victories.

He clarified that showing regard for section 144, and thereby honouring the law of the land, the protest was held within the campus.

The official renaming of the stretch to Mulky Sundararama Shetty road has been postponed from Jun 29, but would take place on Sunday, July 2, it was informed at the protest.

Why should SAC road be named by some other person! The College is a landmark and whatever be the change in the name we will always call it SAC Road itself. Why can't officials name some other road by Mulky Sirs name. This is just an excuse to cause chaos and unrest.

Very surprising that our elected representatives are the chief guests for the ceremony as advertised by the organisers. Shame on them for attending this and support a move to rename a road named after an Iconic institution like St. Aloysius. Renaming the road which is presently named as St. Aloysius Road after a person who is not from Mangalore is not only foolish but hurts the sentiments of tens of thousands of students, many of whom are legendary.
I request the people who are behind this move to try to get M.G.Road in Bangalore renamed to Mulky Sundaram Shetty Road as the Head Office of Vijaya bank is situated there.
God give strength to our corporators and other elected representatives who have sanctioned this move.

Those who wants to name any roads as per their wish, should create new road and then name it as per law. Don't just meddle in others dignity undermining their contribution to our society.
Even our Government have the same attitude of renaming, relaunching by changing names of previous schemes and yojanas.

This unfortunate situation of renaming the (iconic and highly appropriate) St. Aloysius College Road, was certainly uncalled for.

It is not only a great disrespect to the great institution, which has tutored and mentored lakhs of students since the past 130 years, but also to late Shri Mulky Sundaram Shetty (who certainly was a great personality, but would have been very unhappy to see such a controversy happening due to this renaming issue).

At this juncture, it would still be prudent to seek an amicable solution and avoid unpleasantness, which would be in the interests of all concerned.

Our City Mangalore is synonymous with this great institute St. Aloysius College and vice versa. The journey on the road that leads to the college is a educational pilgrimage for many. This institute has served the society irrespective of an individual's caste, creed, religion or economic status. I strongly condemn this move of renaming a road dedicated to St. Aloysius College.

I am sure SAC administration trusted the good judgement of the association people and government. One doesn't disown the parents, unless the parents guided the wrong way. If aloysius education, made them worthy enough to sit in a chair for press conference, then it is them who are traitors. Aloysius, never gave bad education.

Now it will be a matter of egos, and shettys never let it down, even if they drown. What a guru dakshine to the college

St. Aloysius College has greatly contributed to the success of thousand of students in various fields. SAC is a relic for all to remember and venerate. The road leading to the institution was rightly named as St. Aloysius Road. A change is certainly not indicated.

Thousands of students when they retrace their steps to Their Alma Mater, it is indeed a privilege for them to tread through a road named after their Alma Mater.

Hope all concerned realise their responsibility and rightly allow the name to continue.

From a distance, it is difficult to understand which road you are anxious to rename. In any case, you are aware of your needs and therefore let the authorities lend you their ears and listen to your young grievances. The name of a road is very important so that the road of your choice will bear the name of your desire and will remain for many generations to remember.

We also remember that one time there was a keen desire to name a particular road in the name of late Wilfy Rebimbos. We wonder what has happened to this road? We are sure people such as Mr. J. r. Lobo and Mr. Ivan D'Souza will be able to exercise their influence and quench your desires.

As per the college authorities they were aware of the circular inviting any objection to renaming the St. Aloysius road as 'Mulki Sundararama Shetty Road'which was published in a tiny column in 2015. But they say they did not expect it to happen. If only they had taken this issue seriously and raised the objections then this matter would have been closed two years back. There are plenty of Aloysians in Vijaya bank. many of who have retired after reaching the top positions . Perhaps if they intervene in favor of their Alma mater this matter can be settled amicably.

We have such people who cannot make difference between an institution rendered education for the last 130 years and a banker who started bank with others. Education is far better than bank that hovers around money and profits. Sanity should prevail over things and it is the duty of the elected to see that is done. We, today, say South Kanara is a district of intelligent people and at the helm is St Aloysisus college who for the past 130 years have educated lakhs of students and made them intellectuals. This is the least that can be done by the powers that be for an institution that has rendered yeomen service to the district. Look St Aloysius college and its institution at a time when we had no institutions at all. We would still be tapping toddy, and ploughing the fields. The all around development of the district is not the result of last forty years but those 130 years. People should realise this, else we live in society where reason and sanity are not respected and we become a society of fools and stupids. St Aloysius College will be any way great whether naming a road or not, but the society which becomes a witness to this thing gets degraded to much lower level. Let us all get together and keep the same name to the Road as St Aloysius College Road, and Mulki Sundaram Shetty will surely get one more road to be named after him for the service he has rendered.
