Mangaluru: SAC administration objects to renaming of St Aloysius College Road

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (PMD)

Mangaluru, Jun 22: St Aloysius College administration expressed its dismay about the reported news that the road from Catholic Club, Hampanakatta to Ambedkar Circle would be renamed 'Mulki Sundararama Shetty Road', at a press meet at the college, on Thursday, June 22.

The changes would take place via the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) as per the government orders. It is stated that the MCC had taken the decision after getting the consent of several secular organisations.

St Aloysius Institutions made an open appeal to the MCC and the government of Karnataka to re-validate the name 'St Aloysius College Road', as a recognition for the many services rendered by the institution.

"One of the major landmarks in the said road is St Aloysius College. This road was earlier known as Light House Hill Road and later it was named as St Aloysius College Road on the request of the college. The name board still exists. We earnestly feel that there is no need of changing the name of the road at this juncture," said Fr Dionysius Vaz, rector of the college.

"Our focus is on communal harmony. We are looking at a 'dialogue approach' for the problem, and have no intention of creating a controversy. The circular inviting any objection to renaming the road as 'Mulki Sundararama Shetty Road' was published in a tiny column in 2015. But we did not expect it to happen. We will continue calling the stretch 'Aloysius College Road'," he said.

"The 'Aloysius College Road' marker was put in place 15 years ago on our request. Tourists flock to see the chapel here, which is one of the few attractions in the city. This is a 137-year-old Jesuit institute, much older than Fr Muller Hospital which has a road to its name," added the rector.

"As per request by the college, the road markers of St Aloysius College Road was put at the formerly known Light House Hill Road, opposite MCC Bank here. Now all of a sudden, the process of the name being changed to Mulki Sundararama Shetty Road, is underway. We were made aware of the same, from news reports. When we asked for clarification at the MCC, we came to know about the formalities in place," said Dr A M Narahari, registrar of the college.

Preserving a Rich Heritage

Fr Dionysius explained the significance of the college and the need for retaining the name of the road.

"St Aloysius College has no intention of creating a controversy about the services rendered by Mulky Sundararama Shetty. The college has high regards towards him. However, there have been several roads and buildings named after him in the state," the rector clarified.

"The contribution of the college to the society and the nation is very unique. Apart from maintaining high academic standards, the college has been striving after value based education and training to prepare the students as responsible citizens. St Aloysius College has immensely contributed for making Dakshina Kannada an educational hub. St Aloysius College is the pride of Mangaluru. The college, having a glorious history of 137 years of its existence, has rendered outstanding service to the society," the rector said.

"Needless to say that the institution is established and managed by Jesuit Fathers who are known all over the world for their selfless services in education, healthcare and social services," he said.

"It is to be noted that the famous Fr Muller Hospital was established by Jesuits. The services of Fr Muller Hospital have been recognized by naming the main road after it. In this context, the least we could do to appreciate the services of St Aloysius College is to retain the name of the said road as St Aloysius College Road. This is our earnest request," the rector continued.

"There is long list of eminent personalities of the nation who emerged from this campus including Dr TMA Pai, KS Hegde, Vinay Hegde, Justice Santosh Hegde, the former Lokayukta; George Fernandes, politician; Anantha Krishan, Jayarm Bhat, Mahabaleshwar Bhat, Allan Pereira, K V Kamath, Dr K V Rao, Ullas Karanth, Aravind Adiga, Man Booker prize winner; Padmashree Anantha Agarwal, Yenepoya Abdulla Knuhi, Siddarth, founder of Café Coffee Day; Sudhir Shetty, CEO UAE Exchange; cricketer KL Rahul, popular music director Gurukiran, Dr Deviprasad Shetty, Dr Shantaram Shetty, Supreme court advocate Venugopal, other respected advocates like Blazius D’Souza, Subbaiah Shetty and other contemporary politicians like Janardhan Poojary, UT Khader, Ivan D’Souza, Yogish Bhat, Nagaraj Shetty and innumerable number of other former students," he said.

"Two illustrious presidents of India, Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam visited the college and spoke very high of the services of Jesuits in education, healthcare and social. At present there are nearly 14,000 students in SAC campus. Many eminent teachers and academicians of high caliber have served in this college. Former students of SAC keep speaking very high of their great teachers whenever they come back to their alma mater," he informed.

"St Aloysius College Chapel attracts tourists from all over the globe for its world famous and rare paintings. The chapel is a recognised tourist destination and has made Mangalureans proud." he concluded.

Fr Praveen Martis, principal; Fr Pradeep Sequeira, finance officer; N G Mohan, SACAA; Archibald Menezes, president, SACAA, and Fr Melwyn Pinto, vice-principal were present.

I find this behaviour of changing historic name into a new name based on fad, fashion, local politics is ignorant . We all must learn that there are historic names , events and persons that have inspired generations to achieve higher things in life.
    Educational institutions are among them

So let us not be guided by castiesm, or tribalism here , but by higher norms.

Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) as per the government orders is changing the name of the road but does not want to make the road commutable for all the citizens of the city. The road does not have proper footpaths and we always see four wheelers and two wheelers parked on the footpath which is meant for pedestrians to walk, it is such a obstruction for students and senior citizens to use the footpath. Near the Tagore park the footpath is fine but rest of the St. Aloysius College Road the footpath is not according to the specifications. This name 'Mulki Sundararama Shetty Road', would be ideal for Mulki not Mangaluru.

This is atrocious..if this happens, it will be a sad day for kudla.

St Aloysius College is something like brand ambassador for Kudla...such a reverred institution...Sundarram Shetty is just an individual who started and built an institution for his people...st.aloysius sounds christian whereas it is an educational institution from which all religion people have benefitted.

Re-naming a road that has borne the name of an iconic institution for decades now? This is absolutely ridiculous! The Corporation in all its wisdom should be thinking in terms of re-building our roads, controlling traffic and making life on the streets generally safer for Mangalore's pedestrians and drivers. The roads of our city are death traps. Personally I have had close shaves with buses on several occasions. But Jyothi is the worst. Buses come thundering down upon people and vehicles and the traffic police look the other way.

Re-think your priorities, my dear Commissioner and Corporation. Whose gallery are you playing to now?

How the Govt. has abruptly ordered to change from the existing name St.Aloysius College Road to M.Sundaram Shetty Road? Who has played this game? Unless MCC send proposals to change the present name to Sundaram Shetty road how can the Govt. change it abruptly? Its really an insult to this Catholic instituition which has done a lot to the society. but whereas Mr. Shetty has served and become famous in Banking Field. So give his name to some other road . Why cancel and change the road now and then. Have some ethiics on this.

There is no institution that has contributed to education as much as St. Aloysius in the whole of South Kanara. It is the graduates of this college that were Headmasters of different Schools and High Schools. This institution laid the foundation of education in the district. As the first private college of the district the institution has done a great service to the entire district. It is time that all people of the district come together irrespective of caste, creed and religion to retain the name of the road as a sign of gratitude to this institution. Let us express our gratitude to this great institution

Any road in Mangalore / Mulki can be named after the great person, but no other road could be named after St. Aloysius College. Look, the institute is putting up this request so nicely and they have not threatened any action etc which we normally see by others. This institution's request is certainly needs to be given priority over any thing else.

I found so many comments saying who is this Mulki Sunderram Shetty. He has left this world a long time back and he was the person who made Vijaya bank one of the top banks of our state from late 1960's to 70's. If at all you have to take any body to task it is the M.C.C and not Sunderam shetty . Let him res tin peace.

How ever its not fitting tribute to him by changing the name of a road, which has existed and associated for years with " St. Aloysius College" Please rethink and find a suitable road or institution in Mulki itself where his memorial is existing near Bappanadu Temple adjoining highway.

An institute which has served the nation for more than a century and respected by all educated personalities in Mangalore and overseas is being treated by MCC officials like any other institution is an absolute disgrace to the respectful culture. Surely, this would create confusion as to where is Mulki in Mangaloare. I humbly request the MCC officials to revisit their decision on naming this St. Aloysius College Road. Mulki Sundararama Shetty has done a lot of good, very intelligent and deserves a great amount of respect. Having said that, MCC officials should have requested for public opinion or at least inform the college for sake of courtesy. Appears like a back door entry.

Light House Hill road will be called whatever they rename to. This appeasement business has to stop and historic names must be preserved. Chairman from 1962 to 1969 resulting in growth of Vijaya bank.[1] and then remained as full-time Chairman till 1978. Under the Chairmanship of Shri Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty, Vijaya Bank steadily grew into a large All India Bank with nine smaller banks merging with it during 1963-1968. During the year 1965,

Very sad to note our elected representatives have no sense of history ! Mulki Sundaram Shetty was the founder of Vijaya Bank no doubt and has contributed to the economic development of the undivided District of DK and the state. But there are other prominent streets or Circles which can be named after him between Udupi Mulky and Mangaluru. The Light House Hill Road/ St Aloysius College Road has a lot of significance for us the citizens of this city particularly for the immense contribution the SAC has made and continues to make for the social educational and economic welbeing of this place and the country. A very historic & heritage chapel stands on top of this hill. This MCC has simply facilitated the obliteration of the beautiful landscape and skyline of this City by short sighted zoning of the city for civil constructions and the beautiful view and sea breeze the citizens could enjoy for decades from the land mark Light House . Citizens of Mangaluru need to wake up and elect corporators who have a vision, a sense of history , aesthetics and sensitivity to the citizens and not because of their political affiliations

It is better to continue the present name of the road as St.Aloysius College considering the invaluable service rendered to the Society. Sundaram Shetty was the chairman of Vijaya Bank which is situated near Jyothi Talkies. What he has done to the Society? He is only connected to Vijaya Bank. When compared, it is the ideal name to retain as St. Aloysius College road. It is more appropriate.

It is wrong on the part of MCC to change names because these names were given for definite reasons such as contribution made by individuals or Institutions and you will not find roads anywhere in Mangalore having names without a significance.
Now why MCC lost the significance or purpose of this name for this road?
Country and state are reeling under issues that have taken away the peace from society and now MCC wants to get into such cheap acts.
It is good to name Sundaram Shetty Road to a new road and let the SA College Road remain as it is for all the years to come.

Why MCC wants to change name of this particular road? There are still unnamed roads in the city. I think the road from Bunts Hostel to Ambedkar Circle (Jyoti) or from Jyoti to Govt. College, passing through Hampankatta Junction, have no names. So naming after Mulki Sundararama Shetty will be suitable to one of these busy roads in the city.

There was no takers to protest when they have changed from such a beautiful name light house hill road to St Aloysius College Road and the institution admin was happy and it is quite obvious and now if MCC wants to change it administration feel sad and it is also obvious but why oppose. let it be or let it get back to its original name. St.Aloysius College is the real land mark of Mangalore. Established century ago, the College has given highest quality education to thousands and thousands of students and nurtured them to the Society. AS Presidency and Loyala Colleges are the heritage institutions of Madras, St.Aloysius College is for Coastal Karnataka. Hence, the St.Aloysius College Road is apt and it gives the aura for Mangalore region. I am not against naming a road to remember Mulki Sundararama Shetty, the great philanthropist, but it should not be the expense of St.Aloysius College road. That act sidelines the immense contribution given to the society and nation.
