Mangaluru: Thousands of Aloysians march in protest against renaming of road

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Jul 1: Students, staff and the management of St Aloysius Institutions on Saturday July 1 gathered in huge numbers to register their strong protest against the renaming of St Aloysius College Road as Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road after the former chairman of Vijaya Bank.

Students of St Aloysius schools, PU, degree and post-graduate courses along with staff, management and even alumni joined the protest in thousands and marched through the St Aloysius College Road to Town Hall and back to the College premises.

Prior to the protest march, addressing the gathering at the College premises, principal of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) Fr Praveen Martis said, "We are deeply hurt with the decision to rename St Aloysius College Road as Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road. This College has vast history of 137 years and is one of the heritage institutions of Mangaluru. This was St Aloysius College Road and it will forever be St Aloysius College Road.

"We have gathered here in large number for the protest march from St Aloysius College to Town Hall. This will be a peaceful and non-violent protest march demanding justice and retention of the name of St Aloysious College Road," he added.

Chief whip of Legislative Council MLC Ivan D'Souza said, "This College is 137 years old. St Aloysius College Road has existed from the past several years. We all know this road is named after St Aloysius. It is painful to see that scores of students need to gather here and demand retention of the road named after St Aloysius College which is known across the world. We belong to one family and being an ex-Aloysian, I will definitely raise my voice in the Legislative session regarding this."

Rector of St Aloysius College Fr Dionysius Vaz said, "This is not just a road but mark of a respect toward the institution. I want the city to give due respect to the institution for its service during the past 137 years. As you know, all roads in the city lead to St Aloysius. I thank each and every organisation for collabarating with us. This protest will be a peaceful one demanding the justice."

A pledge was taken by all those present in the protest to fight till justice is done.

Catholic Sabha Mangaluru president Anil Lobo, former president of Konkani Sahitya Academy Roy Castelino and many others were present.

In a press note, the college urged the authorities concerned not to allow the road renaming ceremony on July 2 and said, "St Aloysius College strongly condemns the private parties inaugurating the roads within Mangaluru City Corporation jurisdiction. Only Mangaluru City Corporation should officially organize road inauguration if any. Private party inauguration is illegal and unacceptable. We make an appeal to the district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai, legislators, corporators and other dignitaries not to legitimize an irregular programme by attending it."

The college also informed that as the police department has requested the college not to have human chain protest on Sunday as planned, the scheduled programme has been deferred. "The core committee will chalk out the future course of action after waiting for positive response from Mangaluru City Corporation and government of Karnataka," the release stated.

A clarification to some of the comments. In the whole process either Vijay Bank . or Late Mulky Sundarm Shetty or his family or the current employees of the bank have nothing to do as I understand. It is one very small group of retired workers who might not have done anything worth and productive job during their service now trying their best to seek some attention using the name of that great soul of MSRS. Request all to note this and continue to respect MSRS and the bank.

Dear MCC, Authorities, Team that is behind this move from Vijaya Bank, and our great Leaders,

I am not talking here politically, not emotional while writing this statement, writing not just because I belong to a community of interest. I would like to mention here that, names that our city and city roads carried for many years, please do not change their identity. It is a mere common sense, that does not require a lot of explanation or protest. The thought of changing the road name itself is the root cause of such a disturbing situation of the city today.

    Please STOP this inauguration tomorrow.

Vijaya Bank has nothing to do with this road. Their services to this is Zero. In fact their H.O. is shifted to Bangalore more than 2 decades ago. Also St. Aloysius Education institution is a 137 years old college that has produced great people. Students have walked up and down this road to study and achieve great heights and nobody has walked up and down this road to reach Vijaya Bank office for work which is at Jyothi Junction. Where does the issue of renaming road arise about a person from Mulki. It is surprising that this change of road name has not come to the knowledge of J.R.Lobo and Ivan Dsouza before hand and how come this issue was not taken up much earlier and why ID is in forefront in this picture to be in limelight or take credit at the last minute. How did the Govt in Bangalore took such a decision to name a road after a person who is from Mulki and that too without informing St. Aloysius Management. Why these two leaders JRL and ID did not raise this issue earlier or they were kept in the dark. I have feeling this road has been renamed in a very hasty manner back door entry through bribery without which it is not possible. Good the stay has come. Rightly said "All roads leads to St. Aloysius College". Kudos to the Students who have strongly supported the case.

My family so proud of this college due to its contributions towards so many lives of educating families and making us shine on this globe. Just keeping the road name intact will not cost anyone rather it is a pride of mangalore and it's citizens to call as st. Aloysius road rather something else. This college stood there 137 years and stand there end of this earth but this bank man has no place to name at St.ALOYSIUS Road. IF that shetty has contributed to society by all means name a road in mulky or other places rather removing st.aloysius name near the college. Politics and it's leader has no clue of thier mindset and feelings of people but they act like bullies and goons to stir the peace of peace lovers. St.ALOYSIUS pray for those evil minded to good towards society.

    Bank’s Boomerang
The move to rename St. Aloysius College Road after Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty , chief architect of Vijaya Bank’s expansion and consolidation, by some ex-employees of the bank is working as a boomerang and hurting the interests of the bank itself. What is meant to be private relations to boost the image of Mr. Shetty is spoiling the public relations of the bank he strived to build and hurting its public image and core interests. The tsunami of overwhelming protests against the renaming is having a negative impact on the bank’s image and wiping out the accumulated goodwill it enjoyed over the decades. Going by the reaction of readers in Daijiworld, there is talk of withdrawing the patronage of the bank by its depositors.
The college has come upfront in opposing the renaming. Why is the bank management hiding behind the curtain and allowing some of its ex-employees to hurt its image and real interest in terms of potential withdrawal of deposits?
The history of the bank says that it was founded at the Bunts Hostel complex. It is only proper and actionable, as one of the college alumni leader, Mr. NG Mohan, has suggested, to name the arterial road from Ambedkar Circle, also the site of the bank’s Regional Office building, to Bunts Hostel Circle after Mr. Shetty.
Even now it is not too late to suspend the renaming function scheduled for July 2 and work out the modalities naming the road leading to Bunts Hostel. If the renaming goes through as planned, it would be a pyrrhic victory for the short-sighted promoters at the cost of the immediate and long-term interests of the bank. Therefore, the bank, in its own enlightened self interest should halt this misadventure and cut its losses pronto.

    Dear Shankar,
Do appreciate your positive thoughts on this matter, but let us not give it a religious flavor. Irrespective of your faith/religion St Aloysius is an Iconic institution which has molded hundreds and thousands of students over the past 137 years and there should be no second thoughts in naming this road as
St. Aloysius College Road. As you have already expressed that you have not been associated with St. Aloysius College you would not be able to understand the magnanimity of this great institution and the difference it has made in the lives of hundreds of thousand students irrespective of caste or religion.
This institutions is like the Light house hill Tower close by, it has shed light and knowledge on all the students who have passed through its corridors to become better citizens of our nation. I totally disagree with some idiots hell bent on going ahead with renaming a street after their whims.
Few pointers to Vijaya bank, your brand equity will be down through this insane act!
Since you are a public/private entity people who loved having commercial ties with you will re-think!!! and you will reap what you sowed!!!

I saw in one of the pictures, Vijaya bank officials appearing stone faced and subtly embarrassed, as it shows on your face, not all has gone well with your senior management in their brain-less pursuit of renaming a street that is endeared after a heritage educational entity

I am sure true sense and truth will always prevail, you have lost lot of good will and respect in the public domain, when you walk along the street you will notice the difference, so brace for it and enjoy it. madidunno maharaya....

Like you, I never knew the name was changed to St. Aloysius College Road. When was this done? and who was behind it? Change of name whether it is after an institution such as SAC does not enhance the institution. It is already the world renowned institution of learning and its magnificent temple with paintings and frescoes are world treasures. That will remain the same whatever the road is called. Yet, Light House Hill Road had its day, and that monument is dead and gone. St. Aloysius College has been in existence even longer and is still strong and vibrant, and will live as long as Mangaloreans want to learn and study.. for ever, not like a bank which may close its doors and let all the depositors high and dry.
To get out of this mess, I suggest that the solution offered by John Monteiro in his excellent article be accepted. Alternatively, a large sign be erected at the top of the hill near the present Tagore Park, saying "THIS WAY TO ST. ALOYSIUS COLLEGE" and another sign at the top of the road leading from Jyoti (Ambedkar) circle. I do not think the name of St. Aloysius to the road makes any difference. It is not honouring a saint butonly the institution named after him.

It is too late to get a court injunction to stay the renaming.

Vijaya bankers association wants the road to be renamed at any cost just for their prestige. I will withdraw my deposit form Vijaya bank if they are playing with sentiments of Manglorians.
Everyone will come to you when they start their business and talk to you nicely, that is fine, but a few show arrogance and feel proud when they have enough money.

If, really, a public declaration was done long ago of the
renaming decision; then, such protests will prove futile!

Best is to get an injunction from the court n take it from thereon; this is my personal opinion!!

..exactly..this process starts at MCC(Congress ruling) then final approval by relevant authorities in state Govt(Congress ruling)..as per earlier DW reports, VIJAYA BANK union working towards this since 2010, then how come no one knows this..how come institution came to know just prior to the incident!!..its sad that Institution has given mic to a politician(who is part of the present Govt!) and parading students in rain.no school authority bothered when a girl student harassed in public(remember homestay)..

Ramesh, it was a secret backstabbing for the last 7 years! Why SAC was not informed?? Why they are not finding a place in Mulky or other place??? SAC college Road is SAC College Road, Beach road will not be called as city road! Why not change the prestigious road of Bangalore as MSRS road? Why did at the feet of SAC in the name of MSRS? MSRS would have been ashamed by those fanatics attitude!!
Shawl people should mind their own business...this time their own people are not supporting on SAC Road since most of them knows what SAC mean to them and the guidance and sacrifice of priests and faculty for generations!

Illogical, senseless and unethical move by MCC , that too with a grand ceremony to humiliate a great Institution like Aloysius College.
Its not a American university. This College was built for Indians, run by Indians and served the Indians sine 137 years,

Why people (needless to say who they are!) are itching to change the name of Christian Institution Road?! Forget religion, at least pay respect to the college that has glorious 137 years of existence served and serving the proud educated mass and aspirants of good molding! This institution has the pride of producing value based humanity and human values! Shame on people pushing their ideology through the back door! Why they did not find any other temple road or institution served by temple or other religion! For me it looks like a systematic ploy of those fanatics!! People are insulting MSRS by pushing the name change! There are several institution and monuments named after MSRS, why they have to reach the gully of St. Aloysius College????

..what a nonsense..IVAN should know that its his own Govt, there are 3 ministers, MCC under their rule..then how come they didnt know it!!..is these people purposely creating issues and defaming both 'the instituation & the late shetty'..Henceforth, whenever some one demands naming Road, they should be made to maintain that Road at their own cost..

A beautifull statue can be put up remmbering the founder of Vijay bank paying res[pects to him and retain the name of the road as SAC road. Even if the name changes , everybuddy will still call the road sac road or light house hill road. Whats in name and who remmbers new names? We all still call the hampankatta end point still as “clock tower” .

What a joke. The person - Mr. Ivan D'Souza, MLC, who could have solved the issue even before it could crop up - is shedding crocodile's tears. He seems to have forgotten that it is his government that is ruling the state.

Honestly, I wanted the road name to be St. Aloysius College Road, though I am not associated with that college. It is just because, this college is one of the Prestigious landmarks of Mangalore.

But, since 'St. Aloysius' may not go down well with hardcore Hindu groups, and 'Sundar Ram shetty' may not go well with hardcore Christians and Muslims, to settle it in a good way, Light house hill road or Bavutagudde road would be an acceptable name for the road.

We need a stronger at a same time a peaceful protest joined by all the alumni. This institution has been a pillar in shaping the future of millions. The least we can do now is to standby this institution when it needs us.
