Mangaluru: Light House Hill road to be officially renamed after Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty on Sep 23

Mangaluru, Sep 22: After several protests and controversy over renaming St Aloysius College Road as Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road, the former chairman of Vijaya Bank, the road from Ambedkar circle to Catholic Club will be renamed as Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty road on September 23 at 9 am, said a statement released Mangaluru city mayor Diwakar.

It may be recalled, back in 2017, the proposal of the city corporation to rename the road between Ambedkar Circle and Catholic Club via Light House Hill to be renamed as Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road had led to protests and controversy. After the decision faced opposition and the renaming was kept in abeyance, it was questioned in the high court through a writ petition. The high court had granted stay against the implementation of the order.

Even the students of St Aloysius College marched to the streets on the controversial road renaming issue.

A fact finding committee was formed headed by then deputy commissioner to look into the demands made by various parties relating to renaming of Light House Hill road. It may be recalled that after the city corporation put through processes to rename this road as Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road and it was approved by the ministry of urban development, objections had been received and different parties had staked their claims seeking to rename this road as St Aloysius College Road, Bavutagudda Road, and Idgah Road. The decision was put on hold at the behest of MLA J R Lobo.

At its meeting, the committee collected supplementary documents from four parties who had been insisting that this road should be named as per their demands.

Even the representatives of Vijaya Bank Officers’ Organization said that they had obtained legal sanction for renaming this road after former chairman of their bank and that MLA J R Lobo had written to the government and secured a stay against the process of renaming the road. They noted that even the city corporation had approved the proposal to rename Light House Hill road as Sunder Ram Shetty Road. Karunakar Shetty, Seethacharan Shetty, Raghuram Suvarna and Rajgopal Rai, who appeared on behalf of the organization, claimed to be in possession of all records to prove their claim and reiterated their demand to christen the said road as Sunder Ram Shetty Road.

Light House Hill Road, or St. Aloysius College suits the most to to this age old road which is familiar with it. Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty Road be given to some road at Mulki and here in Mangalore. Lots of names of some prominent Leaders, Social workers, etc. who deserves this are pending for quite long time. Consider them first (like George Fernandes etc.) Why cry for a split milk. Any sanctity for this?

The State Government, Mangalore City Corporation and the District Administration should have taken wise steps in naming St., Aloysius Road as there is a placard displayed in between the compound wall of KMC Medical College and the Syndicate Bank. It was clearly showing to the public years and years before.

Is the District Administration taking revenge on The Lady-Hill circle re-naming Narayana Guru Circle???!!! And after objections from Public differed for the time being

The Central Govt., is busy in making:
1) Un-Imperative Farm laws.
2) Busy in Sushanth Singh Suicide case!!!
3) Constructing Parliament Building and Statues.
4) Chinese have occupied India’s Finger point Land
5) Prime Minister N. Modi is issuing statement that no Chinese soldiers inside Indian land.
(And Later the statement is removed from government’s official papers)
5) Doklam is already sold.
6) PSU Banks are drowning at the behest of government’s apathy.
7) Demonetization was a Greatest Mismanagement.
8) Foreign Trips became futile. FDI never rolled into India.
9) Richest man Baba Ramdev’s Loan’s was written off.
10) Thousands of farmers and Business-Men lost business and have committed Suicide. However the Government is behind Sushanth Singh Suicide case.

Every Indian knows the central Government was the sole hand in gloves in destroying India’s economy.

Dear corporation head and politicians concerned with this changing names of road. First of all do and look into the maintenance of this road. Be hold the present status of name it was a Light hill Road and century old running institution.

When the Vijaya Bank it self is no more, then Why Mr. Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty's name for this road?????

There was no proper road or approach to this Mayor's residence till late before he could be elected, but has soon as he got the position an concrete road has been laid.. He lives in pandeshwar. So power works in naming of roads even in this pandamic situation. Who cares about the vaccination which is the need of the hour for our citizens of India, let it come or not I'm in power and I care a dame about you, A total Aandha bhakth situation.
Ask a question to your own self where was I in the year 1885 when the naming of this street was done??
Secondly ask a question to your ownself where did my children studied in Mangalore and where have they reached..
Thirdly prove the person you want to be named that of what was his contribution towards this city of Mangalore.. Has he sacrificed or his he a martyer?
Friends let's not have words of war but let's be a good citizens of our country. Mangalore is pure and serene let's have a good harmony amongst ourselves.

Why are we renaming the road? What good is it bringing? And most of all why a Vijaya bank chairman's name... I see no good done by them on that road... Except the put a circle shed in between with their name h logo, but no traffic police is ever found thr even during high traffic hours... Vijaya bank ppl sud be investing their time in doing things that better their banking system work like developing their app better. Half of the time the app does not work... "Light house hill" is the best name and keeps everyone happy... It does not hurt anyone's sentiments

Did those people who fought to rename the road ever raised their voices against the bad condition of the roads in the city? Did they ever bothered about looting the patients in the private hospitals in the name of Corona positive? Outsiders thin that Mangalore people are intellectuals! You find hundred of potholes in the city. MCC should pass a resolution that no more renaming of the roads.Enough is enough.

This is the development work our MCC is doing. They failed to change the Lady hill circle, so this issue they have taken up this dead issue. Actually this S R Shetty name should be at Bunts Hostel Circle. It would have been better and some sense. Now this is non sense. We need educated representatives. Now it will be a job for next City corporation who will be in power to reinstate the old name.

You people allowed to merge profit making vijaya bank to merge with a sinking Gujrati bank for your benefit and now want to rename a road after the founder of Vijaya Bank. This is a biggest tragedy and irony. You had no courage to oppose the merger and now we are facing the brunt of standing in line to change our passbook, cheque book, account number etc when we are supposed to maintain social distancing. I personally faced this problem in B C Road branch of Bank of Baroda and when finally got my passbook I was almost heart broken to see the name of Vijaya Bank almost non-visible. Anyways, you may name the entire country in Mulky Sundar Ram Shetty's name, if you wish so but I have decied to shift my entire account to another bank shortly. All account holders should do so in protest of the merger. Merely naming a road when the bank is non-existant makes no sense at all.

This road at places does not have a footpath. The Mayor should look into it and not rename roads. Now since the college is closed the Mayor is planning to change the name of the road, a big disgrace with a big fat face.

ರಸ್ತೆಯ ಹೆಸರು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸಲು ತೋರಿಸಿದ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯು, ವಿಜಯ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ತೋರಿಸಿದ್ದರೆ ಕೊನೆಯ ಪಕ್ಷ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕ್ ಆದರೂ ಉಳಿಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ರಸ್ತೆಯ ಹೆಸರು ಮರುನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡಿ ಏನೂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನವಿಲ್ಲ. ಮರುನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡುವ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ಯಾಂಕ್ ಇಲ್ಲ.

If they really respect the person, they should have tried saving his bank from merger. The MP, state govt and Central govt. are of the same party. Yet now voices were raised. Let them change it, people will stick to old names. As in the case of Jyoti ( Ambedkar circle), pumpwell (mahaveer circle), kpt junction (basaveswara circle), airport road (vishweswaraya road) etc....

Whatever name you give, it will always remain as LIGHT HOUSE HILL ROAD by the public.

Any one is having problem, difficulty with the present name,? If u change the name are there any benefits to public or those travel by the way? There is so much more to do n think seems to be these people can think of only changing names. I hope after changing names public don't have to pay taxes, each family will get a vehicle.

I was just about to say when the MCC announced that the proposal to rename Ladyhill Circle has been deferred due to objection; they will come up with this ploy and announce it at the last minute. My intuition came true. With all due respect to Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty, a former student of St Aloysius College he should be given a place of honour in Mulki itself, not in Mangalore. When Vijaya Bank is now history, this move does not hold sense. The renaming of the Lady Hill Circle, is just a matter of time!

Great, we lost Vijaya Bank and resurrected late Mr. Shetty. Hope late Mr. Shetty will come back and start Vijaya bank once again.

Sep 23rd is a good date to remember it is "Autumn Equinox" When leaves begin to fall, temperatures drop and days become shorter. Our memory will also become shorter!

Bank started by this person Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty gone to the docks and the Mayor wants the road to perish. The St. Aloysius College which is there for 140 years but the bank came and disappeared. What good has Mulki Sunder Ram Shettu done only established a loss making bank which got lost.
Long live St. Aloysius college.

It was never called Aloysius college road for your kind information. Even the address and board of Aloysius college it is mentioned as LHH road. Aloysius college was just dragged into this controversy by the vested interest so as to back their opposition to renaming in 2017 under the leadership of Lobomaam. This led to his popularity downfall among the majority community who were the same people who elected him 4 years back .

Change the name of the roads and circles as it pleases but that does not change the history of the city. Renaming of the roads, circles and flyovers is the only development one can expect. Vijaya bank and its founders are now already gone in the pages of unread history........Mayor Sahab, Please think of improving the conditions of the roads, footpaths, drainage and parking to alleviate the suffering of the people of the city.
