Mangaluru: MLA Lobo, MLC Ivan behind St Aloysius road controversy, alleges BJP

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Jul 3: The BJP on Monday July 3 targetted Congress legislators MLC Ivan D'Souza and MLA J R Lobo over the issue of renaming St Aloysius College Road and alleged that both of them had a role to play in the controversy as they 'did not wish to see harmony between two communities'.

As per an order issued in May, the St Aloysius College Road was supposed to be renamed after the late Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty, former chairman of Vijaya Bank. After St Aloysius Institutions, alumni and civic groups rose in protest during which Ivan D'Souza was also present, and following a letter by J R Lobo to the state government, the renaming was stayed until further notice.

Addressing a press meet here, former MLC and senior BJP leader Monappa Bhandary said, "The issue between two institutions of repute on the renaming of a road is condemnable. Both institutions have gained popularity all over the nation in their respected fields. MLA J R Lobo and MLC Ivan D'Souza are behind this controversy. Their handling of this issue indicates they do not wish to see harmony between the two communities."

Training guns on J R Lobo, he said, "The name of Sunder Ram Shetty to Light House Hill Road was given as per the goverment order and after completing due legal proceedings by the MCC. If the College and the MLA were against the renaming of the road after Sunder Ram Shetty, why did they not oppose it in the MCC council meeting and at the time of other proceedings? If all councillors agreed to the renaming, it means people from all communities consented. After everything was set, why did they suddenly oppose? Why is the local MLA doing discrimination in the name of community?"

"The stay order on renaming of the road was issued within hours of the protest and letter to the government. It shows there's something fishy about the whole issue. BJP demands investigation into this issue. The MLA should explain the reason behind the stay order. Both the MLA and the MLC are responsible for any kind of incident related to the issue that disrupts peace," Bhandary said.

Leaders Vedavyasa Kamath, Namitha Shyam and Kishore Rai were present.

Jyothi circle is renamed to Ambedkar circle. Is any one aware?

there must thousands of roads, circles named after Gandhi, Ambedkar, Nehru...what was the necessity to rename Jyothi circle?

there is one road named Bunts Hostel road...why should a public road bear the name of caste / caste organisation? Will MCC kindly rename this important road to something more broad-minded and cosmopolitan rather than caste/caste based institution's name?

Vijaya Bank was founded in 23rd October 1931 by late Shri A.B.Shetty. Shri Sundaram Shetty takes credit for merging all tiny banks. And not being founder. I think Vijaya Bank hates mangalore and Mangaloreans if not why they had to move to headquarters to Bangalore? You don’t want to show you started here and you belong here? You want to make full mangalore yours by naming all the roads leading to Aloysius in your name?
Please give some space to other 6 nationalised banks too which stated in DK to have their identity and show they belong to mangalore. Just by giving political colour you can hide all these facts and loopholes? The College wouldn’t have gone to JR Lobo or any other MLA /MLC if they had heard lakhs of cries of students, staff and Alumni of the college. Even you are proving it by catching some political head and asking him to give political statement so that he can also gain some publicity by adding weight to your incomparable name for the road.

Bhandary Uncle, even with this gimmick of yours BJP is not going to win the MLA election next time in Mangalore. This is not a religious issue. Aloysius may be a minority run institution but for an Aloysian its institution first and then cast creed religion. Dont try to play dirty politics. It shows your mindset. To be a politician you need to have a big heart and the thinking of a visionary and be inclusive not do these petty dramas

I think we should get away with all names of the road and instead go with numbering of the road which is more scientific .In most of the organised cities around the world numbering is in place.
It was felt earlier that name is better to remember the road but the controversy over naming each and every road and the politics around it make things complicated.

It has become a fashion to communalise and politicise every single issue in Mangalore. If the road had no name at all, then nobody minds naming the road with due formalities. In this case the road was already St Aloysius Road and the institution is current and running, how come anyone even think of changing the road name? There is surely some hidden agenda behind this. Please also note that St Aloysius College does not represent Christians alone. So why blame J R Lobo and Ivan for no reason when they only fought against the injustice???

Mangalore which was one of the most peaceful cities has become the most dangerous and challenging place for minority. The most democratic issue has been converted into communal issue by self interested politicians. To that extent, the person (Mr. J R Lobo) who has the highest integrity and selfless love for Mangalore regardless of the community, has been labled as communal .... is very unfortunate and indicates the how the mighty can dictate terms. This small road issue should not have gone to this level. What it really indicates is the insecurity to minority. VIJAYA BANK is the one which added fuel to this fire..they do not deserve to do banking. I REQUEST ALL secular people to close their relationship with VIJAYA BANK... please...

If we all refresh our memories BJP is the first one to object and raised one of the sharpest voice of changing name during Tipu Sultan. See who is raising the issue of renaming now?

Renaming cities in India began 20 years ago in 1996, when the BJP and Shiv Sena renamed Bombay. On flights that are arriving at Kempegowda airport, the air hostess announces you are landing in “Bangoloru” or “Bangoluru”. That is how most people pronounce the name of this city, which was renamed officially by the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014, along with 11 other cities in Karnataka. The name was changed from Bangalore to Bengaluru but people outside the state are not familiar with the new name and so the confusion produces “Bangoluru”.

Nowhere in the 1.8 million words of Vyasa’s Mahabharata is there a mention of a Gurugram as it stands on the present day area of Gurgaon.

On April 12, the Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s cabinet renamed Gurgaon to Gurugram - meaning the village of the guru - citing mythological records. The guru in question is Dronacharya, the indigent warrior Brahmin who trained the Kauravas and Pandavas in warfare.
The BJP has changed another name, turning Gurgaon into Gurugram. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has been using the name Gurugram for a long time and the government has followed its lead.

Real change, which transforms our poorly designed and poorly managed urban spaces into smart cities, is very difficult to do. We do not have the resources to do this, and nor should it be a priority in a part of the world where the real problems are poverty, illiteracy, violence, health and hunger. Our priority cannot be better cities. Since real change is not possible, we must satisfy ourselves with a change in name.
BJP exactly delivering the smart cities by merely changing names.

BJP making a issue out of this will only make Late Sunder Ram Shetty unhappy . St Aloysius College road will make people of all caste , creed and religion happy as we all know we students from different religions, language and background were all Aloysians.None of us had time to think about caste and religion. All were treated equally by the Principal and Lecturers of St Aloysius College. There does not seem BE anything fishy about the roles played by Mr. J.R. Lobo and Mr. Ivan D'Souza. They are fighting for a cause. St. Aloysius institution has a name and history from the time the nine Jesuit fathers landed at The Idgah Hill. These Jesuit fathers and the the other Jesuit fathers who followed them have rendered yeoman service to the community without caste and creed. The least Mangaloreans could do was to retain the original name of ST. ALOYSIUS COLLEGE ROAD.

Hope our communities work in harmony and do justice to all.

Hats of to BJP.....Congress should learn politics from BJP....the poison has been filled in the minds of Hindu's in no time. I'm a Aloysian studied in Aloysius for 15 years. Aloysius have given importance to all religions. I being a Proud Hindu request all the Hindu's to ignore BJP's religious politics. Unlike me many Hindu's have taken good education from St Aloysius and are excelling in their careers.

St Aloysius has given education to all the sections of Hindu’s, It has not seen whether you are Shudra or Dalit or a Brahim. 100 years ago during the time of caste discrimination where lower caste was not allowed to take education it was St Aloysius who gave education. My Grand parents, My Father and myself all studied in St Aloysius.

Let us not forget St Aloysius is the first educational institution in the whole of Undivided Dakshina Kannada,

Since that particular Road has already been named as "St Aloysius Road" Changing the name would hurt the sentiments of all the people related to the institution.
I request BJP not to politise this issue in the interest of Mangalore instead find another road for Mulky Sundaram Shetty which has no specific name.
If BJP is a responsible party it should not politise this issue

BJP is talking same as China was accusing India recently. First, was there any MCC meeting calked?. Second, road name is already in the name of St. Aloysius, so why BJP wants to start with a controversy?. Name of the institute which renders selfless service to the society and produces proud young talents to serve the nation as patriotic citizens should be unanimously named. Why they spotted SAC road? why did they not find any other road in DK? Why go to the base of SAC to get their road name which is pride institution of Mangalore for 137 years? This time people of all wakes of life immaterial of religion affiliation protested name change. BJP may lose respect for raking this issue and politicizing it. Lobo has done this job in order to avoid more problems in the city. People are just waiting for an opportunity to swim in troubled water while world economy is struggling!
