Mangaluru: Privatisation of airport - protest by employees force bidders to back out

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 15: Representatives of GMR Airport Private Ltd and National Investment and Infrastructure Fund, who had arrived at the Mangaluru International Airport here for spot visit in tune with the process of privatisation of the airport on Monday January 14, had to go back empty-handed on account of protest by the airport staff.

Bidding process for privatisation of several airports including the local one is on now. In the initial stages, those who have filed bids are allowed to visit the airports individually and undertake independent evaluation. Officials of the above two companies had come on Monday to undertake evaluation exercise.

The teams reached the airport at about 10 am. As soon as they came to know of lit, airport employees joined together and began to hold protest. Disturbed by this development, the teams went back without undertaking evaluation process.

Shravan Kumar, secretary of Airport Employees Association's local unit, noted that the airport here is making profit and that the employees are determined not to allow this to be handed over to private companies. He said that like the Monday's successful protest, they will continue to hold protests if such developments take place again in future.

Unlike private airport, Govt. run airport is not operating only for profit. It is a service also. For instance the airports in North East are loss making but AAI is operating it as those are the life line of that land. Govt is compensating those losses from other profit making ones. Whether private players will take such airport and operate? They never. Privatisation is the only solution is a wrong thinking which is created from the marketing policies of private operators. They rate every thing in terms of money. When more private banks come into play, people went their to get loans as the same was sanctioned immediate. But now the trend changed. People prefer PSU banks. Though requirement increased why this happened?

Next they will not allow outsiders into Mangaluru smart city. They will claim it is running well. The purpose of a smart city is to provide top class infrastructure so that companies will find it attractive to start business.

Private companies, like jet airways what they are doing now, will simply shut down operation if business is in loss. But majority of airports are loss making, still AAI is running them.

A reply to previous comments. Even after privatization the same immigration, same customs, same air India, same taxiwallas will continue. Only AAI staff will change. AAI staff, other than terminal manager no one is directly linked to passengers. I think people are misinformed..

IF its not privatized..then its gone.....I am sure Mangalore airport is not gonna develop at all...As Karnataka government is not bothered much about Mangalore and its developments. Its not that major investments are not coming to Mangalore. Its few people who are causing friction to it. Land aquisition is major problem in Mangalore. And these employees ofMangalore airport are not basically from mangalore city. They hail from laid back outskirts of Mangalore associated with communal parties.especially those taxi owners

Good move, Airport operations need to be privatised, services and priority improved in some of the major airports after privatisation .... Good example is Mumbai Airport .... GVK is doing very systematic work ....
People having no knowledge of what privatisation would be, will keep objecting every govt. move ....

One must understand....Airport is for users gain and comfort and not that of employees!! These employees can not deprive good services to consumers! Why major airports of India are privatised and user is benefited??? Mangalore Airport should be brought outside the clutches of employees and taxi mafia!!! Why there is no police force to take employees to task????

For the survival, improvement and growth privatization of the airport is a must. These lazy fossils have to understand this as otherwise we may not have an airport in a few years from now. With privatization I don't think any good employee will lose his job as they will be absorbed into the work force and addition with growth the airport will also provide additional job opportunities for local youth. Most of these guys protesting are lazy and over the years have become parasites which is why they are protesting. They know that discipline will be enforced after privatization and the chalta hai attitude will be over and done with. If an opinion of the people of Mangalore is taken I am sure over 90% will opt for privatization. We are seeing in front of our own eyes the performance of Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi airports after privatization.

Mumbai , Blore and many other airports are privatized and provided good service to travellers. There has been no issues at all. The Mluru airport employees are lazy and greedy always looking for bakras to loot. 2 weeks back we landed in the afternoon at 4.45pm from Dubai and to our surprise the immigration counters were empty.!!!! , Apparently on a tea break. Believe me, they casually came after 20 minutes chatting and laughing just ignoring the huge queue in front of them. The customs officer are always on the look out for a new traveller to loot gauging the peoples knowledge on Hindi. No wonder these jokers do not want to privatize the airport.

Yeah I know I agree with you. It was on 5th January 2019, Air India Express landed at around 4.45pm. I too was one of the privileged to experience this. The big que was outside the hall . Everyone one was cribbing. Very very unprofessional attitude from the authorities , they came after 30 minutes perhaps. Our luggage had arrived before us for the first time in history.

The airport employees should realize that soon this airport may close and they will be left jobless. The day is not far. The sector is proving non lucrative to some airlines and have stopped or limited their operations in this sector. The sector is not even drawing new budget airlines too.
NRIs may have to fly thru Mumbai or Blore .
