Mangaluru, Apr 14: A significant cultural and spiritual site has been reported from the Kacharu area of Kotekar village in Dakshina Kannada district, where a nearly 500-year-old Naga stone (serpent deity idol) has been discovered in a severely neglected condition.
The sacred Naga grove (Nagabana), where the stone is located, is currently in a highly dilapidated state. The area has reportedly been affected by flooding over time, leading to submergence and considerable damage.

In addition, waste accumulation and nearby land-filling activities have further threatened the sanctity of the site, pushing it towards further deterioration.
Alarmed by the condition, local residents along with members of the Kacharu Naganakatte Committee have initiated restoration efforts. The rejuvenation work is being led by Balakrishna Kacharu and Narayana Kacharu, with the blessings of Bollava Sathyashankara Bhatta, Dharmadhikari of Sringeri Math.
As per astrological consultation, a 'Tambula Prashna' ritual was conducted, which indicated the presence of a Naga deity believed to possess a sacred 'Nagamani'.
The ritual also suggested the existence of two Naga stones at the site, one of which is reportedly damaged. In addition, the presence of a Kshetrapala (guardian deity) stone has also been identified.
Experts have cautioned that failure to undertake immediate restoration could lead to further deterioration of the site and potential spiritual imbalance in the future. Following these concerns, several rituals, including poojas, homas and expiatory ceremonies, have already been performed.
Local residents have now come together with renewed commitment to preserve and restore the ancient shrine, aiming to protect the heritage site for future generations.
