Udupi: Banana storage centres raided, chemical use detected

Udupi, Aug 20: Officials from the Food and Health departments conducted raids on three to four banana storage centres in Alevoor, Udupi, following complaints regarding the use of chemicals to artificially ripen bananas.

The raids were conducted by Kundapur assistant commissioner Rashmi, along with officials from the Health Department and Food Department.

During the inspection, officials reportedly detected the use of harmful chemicals to accelerate the ripening of bananas. Artificial colouring agents used in the process were also seized.

Cases have been registered against those found using harmful chemicals to artificially ripen the fruits. Vehicles allegedly used for the activity were also seized by the officials.

Further details regarding the quantity of chemicals and other materials seized are awaited.
