Pittsburgh, Jan 14: The curtain came down on a historic chapter in Pittsburgh Steelers’ history on Tuesday as head coach Mike Tomlin announced his decision to step down after an illustrious 19-season tenure with the franchise.

“After much thought and reflection, I have decided to step down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Tomlin said in a statement. “The organisation has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honour to lead this team.”

Tomlin exits as one of the most successful and consistent coaches in NFL history, having never recorded a losing season during his time in Pittsburgh. He finishes with an impressive regular-season record of 193 wins, 114 losses and two ties.

Appointed head coach in January 2007 at the age of 34, Tomlin became the first Black head coach in Steelers history. Just a year later, he guided the team to Super Bowl XLIII, where Pittsburgh defeated the Arizona Cardinals to clinch the franchise’s sixth championship. He also led the Steelers to the Super Bowl again in the 2010 season, where they lost to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV.

Under Tomlin, the Steelers qualified for the playoffs 13 times and won the AFC North division on eight occasions. His final game in charge came earlier this week, when Pittsburgh suffered a 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans in the AFC wild-card round.

Steelers president Art Rooney II paid rich tribute to Tomlin, calling his contribution to the franchise unparalleled. “It is hard for me to put into words the level of respect and appreciation I have for Coach Tomlin,” Rooney said. “His track record of never having a losing season in 19 years will likely never be duplicated. My family and everyone connected to Steelers management are forever grateful for the passion and dedication he devoted to Steelers football.”

Tomlin, now 53, also made history in his second season by becoming the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl at 36 years and 323 days, a record later surpassed by Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay.

Reflecting on his journey, Tomlin expressed gratitude to the Rooney family, players, staff and fans. “Steelers Nation’s passion, loyalty and high expectations are what make this franchise truly special,” he said. “Coaching in Pittsburgh is unlike anywhere else, and I will always take great pride in having been a steward of this team.”

With Tomlin’s departure, the Steelers — known for their rare coaching changes — now face the task of appointing only their fourth head coach since 1969, marking the beginning of a new era for the storied franchise.
