Ipoh: India falls short in 2-3 thriller against Belgium at Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

Ipoh, Nov 25: A spirited Indian outfit put up a determined fight but narrowly lost 2-3 to Belgium in a rain-disrupted encounter at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup on Tuesday.

Abhishek (33rd) and Shilanand Lakra (57th) found the net for India, while Belgium rode on a brace from Roman Duvekot (17th, 46th) and a penalty corner strike by Nicolas De Kerpel (45th).

Coming off a confident 1-0 victory over three-time champions South Korea in their opening match, India, led by defender Sanjay, began the contest on a strong defensive note. Goalkeeper Pawan was tested early but responded with sharp saves as Belgium earned successive penalty corners in the first quarter, only to be denied by a resolute Indian backline.

Belgium eventually broke through in the 17th minute via Duvekot, just as India appeared to be settling into rhythm.

The Men in Blue returned from halftime with renewed energy, stitching together a swift attacking move that ended with Abhishek equalising in the 33rd minute. The joy was short-lived, however, as De Kerpel restored Belgium’s lead through a penalty corner in the 45th minute. Duvekot extended the advantage moments later at the start of the final quarter.

India fought hard in the closing stages, with Lakra reducing the margin in the 57th minute after an accurate cross from Rabichandra Singh. A brilliant last-minute save by Mohit HS kept India in contention, but the equaliser remained elusive.

India will take on hosts Malaysia in their next outing on Wednesday.
