New Delhi, Jul 8: Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, fresh off a gold medal win at the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic, says the event is a fulfilment of his dream to give back to a nation that has stood by him throughout his journey.

The 27-year-old javelin star clinched the top spot with a throw of 86.18 metres at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, electrifying the crowd of nearly 15,000.

“Winning was special, but building this event was even more meaningful. I’ve always dreamt of doing something for India, and the Neeraj Chopra Classic is a step in that direction,” Chopra shared in a heartfelt message. “Thank you to everyone who made this possible—from the athletes who travelled far, to the roaring fans at the stadium. It was one of the best atmospheres I’ve experienced.”

Kenya’s Julius Yego took silver with a season-best 84.51m, while Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage claimed bronze at 84.34m.

Despite starting with a foul, Chopra took control in his second attempt (82.99m) and delivered the winning throw on his third (86.18m). He rounded out his evening with throws of 84.07m and 82.22m, along with another foul.

This victory adds to Chopra’s impressive 2025 season. He began with a win in South Africa’s Potch Invitational Meet, threw a national record 90.23m in Doha, and secured podium finishes in Poland, Paris, and Ostrava.

With each competition, Chopra continues to blend sporting excellence with national pride — and now, through his namesake meet, he’s building a legacy that inspires athletes far beyond the track.
