Udupi, Jan 18: This Paryaya was not like any Paryayas held in the past. None of the Swamijis from Ashta (eight) Maths were present when Puthige Shri Sugunendratheertha Swamiji, ascended the Sarvajnya Paryaya Peetha in the early hours of Friday January 18.

This is for the third time that Shri Sugunendrateertha Swamiji is ascending the Sarvajnya Paryaya Peetha in his life. However, the Swamijis of 6 other Maths boycotted the Paryaya while Shiroor Swamiji who was expected to attend Paryaya too gave a slip at the eleventh hour. There was no Swamiji to handover the authority. During the second term of Puttige Swamiji’s Paryaya, he had toured USA, which led to controversy as the Swamijis of other Maths, headed by Pejawar Shri Vishweshateertha Swamiji raised objections against him. They demanded that, Puthige Swamiji should not conduct Shri Krishna Puja during his Paryaya. Even after many rounds of discussions, the issue was not resolved. Finally when no favourable result was attained, the Swamijis of 6 Maths decided boycott Paryaya.

As per the tradition, Krishnapur Swamiji who was at the helm of Sarvajnya Paryaya Peetha hitherto had to handover the key of Sri Krishna Math. However, owing to the boycott of rest of the Swamijis, Puthige Swamiji ascended the Paryaya Peetha on his own.

Shiroor Swamiji had supported Puthige Swamiji till the last moment. However, he finally caved in when pressure mounted on him from all circles.  But nothing prevented Puthige Swamiji from ascending Paryaya Peetha at 5.55 am on Friday and holding his first Paryaya Darbar at 6.05 am along with Shri Raghumanyateertha Swamiji of Bhimankatte Math.

Earlier a tradition procession from Jodukatte started after Puthige Swamiji took holy dip in Dandateertha at Kaup.  Various colourful tableaux though added attraction to the procession, the absence of 7 Swamiji who usually accompany on palanquins was felt throughout.

In his message after ascending the Paryaya Peetha, Puttige Swamiji declared that ‘Vishwa Madhva Math’ will be established abroad within next Navaratri, to spread the preaching of Sri Krishna.

Frankly, the modern realities have not been accounted in many of the followings in Hinduism. As a matter of fact, many of the followings are available for custom specific intepretation. Call it dilution or whatever, but these things are taking place.

For example, a male or a female entering the wedlock are supposed to cross a river after the ceremony of "nandi". But such a thing cannot be followed today. However, once Nandi is finished people generally do ensure that they don't indulge in adventurous travel or activities. While I don't see it as politics, I do see it as part of a ongoing discussion/deliberation and it is time that other swamijis accept the reality and suggest some changes to take into account the changing times. Afterall a discussion in a right spirit between the swamijis of ashtamaths is the need of the hour.

Puttige Seer is not the first Udupi Seer to go abroad. But when another Seer went (I think it was Swami Vibhudesh - not sure) he asked his Shishya to do the Pooja to Krishna. We Hindu's worship idols. But it is not our belief that idols are God = it is just a mechanism to remind us of God - Sort of like a photograph of some one you love.

Puttige Seer has been worshipping all the time. Does it mean all the idols he has worshipped have been desecrated? Or is it that only 'Udupi' Krishna should not be touched after going abroad? That seems odd. Even then, have these maThadhipathi's given any proof where it says you cannot do pooja to Ududpi Krishna after going to a foreign country? They say strictures. Can they name them? Do they think they have interpreted the scriptures correctly? Does the scripture say this is valid in all circumstances?

Don't we worship Hanuman and Ram who did the Samudrollanghan? If we are talking about Bhga Bhumi, India already has an entire Bhogabhoomi inside it! So what are they talking about? I understand it is not easy to let go of traditions and beliefs even when we know these have lost meaning. It is this resistance to change that made Mathadhipathi's to oppose Puttige Seer. But change has happened and let them gracefully accept it because Hinduism accepted change in the past - didn't Hindus stop animal sacrifices in Yagna due to the influence of Buddha and Mahaveera?

It is true that today Hindu traditions have more Buddhist practices (Not theology) than what is followed by Buddhist. (I cannot say the same thing about Jains - a religion that I admire most!) Last, my observations about Puttige Seer. I have seen him closely when he was in USA in the city I live. I can say he has followed all the traditions, Pooja etc very religiously. He brought his own cook too to ensure that he does not eat any thing outside the norm even by accident! BUT, it is NOT TRUE that he preached Madva Siddhantha to Westerners on daily basis here.

He cannot claim that he has spread Madva Siddhantha in the West! It was mostly Madwas who attended his discourses and Poojas. His speeches to any non-indian-origin people was only during some big Dias functions such as world religion forum meeting. But he did not create the wave that Swami Vivekanda created. So it is wrong to compare the two as many have done in the past.

Nevertheless, I hope and pray that when Swamiji comes after this paryaya, he be able to reach the pinnacle of success that Swami Vivekananda reached or may be even beyond that (I say that because, America does not know at all who Swami vivekanda was - nor his teachings- he did create a lot of wave when he was here - I have read a compilation of many mind boggling articles about him that appeared in those days. But today, no one knows about his teachings.

On the occasion of His Holiness Sri Sri Sugunendra Swamy ascending the Sarvajna Paryaya Peetha at Shri Krishna Mutt, Udupi, I pray Almighty God to bestow his special blessings on Swamy – “An angel of Peace.” May the scholarly teachings of Sri Sugunendra Swamy be enlighten us, and May the Hindu philosophy of tolerance be spread across the oceans.
