Bangalore, Dec 8: Can we imagine that the dolls could speak?
Yes, "The Dolls Speak" exhibition was held in Bangalore by Francoise Bosteels. She, a Belgian by birth who came to India more than 30 years ago, is a member of the Sisters of the Divine Saviour (SDS). The exhibiiton showcased her collection of dolls, made over a period of over 25 years.
Francoise says: "These dolls show us around and guide us towards a deeper awareness of 'The other India', the India of the excluded, the oppressed and the despised. We stand summoned to probe, grasp and disclose the human depths and the hidden riches of people's daily life.
"The dolls are my language. They are the visible symbols woven in the context of everyday life of everyday people. They tell us that ordinary people are still resourceful and have vitality, still struggle for life and dignity, still hold on to the values of sharing and compassion. The dolls exist in the artist's inner world. They are people who I have learnt to love and care for."
The experimental warmth of the dolls is also a reason for their appeal to so many who come to these kinds of exhibitions. The ideas are so innovative and commendable.
