Puttur cheating case: HC says accused must take responsibility for child

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Apr 23: New developments have emerged in a case involving Krishna J Rao, son of BJP leader Jagannivas Rao from Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district, who has been accused of cheating a young woman by promising marriage, engaging in a physical relationship, and later refusing to marry her after she became pregnant.

According to the complaint, Krishna J Rao and the woman were in a relationship for nearly seven years. During this period, he allegedly established a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage. The woman later became pregnant and gave birth to a child, following which the accused is said to have refused to marry her. This forms the crux of the case registered against him.

Krishna J Rao has now approached the high court (HC) seeking quashing of the case. Arguing on behalf of the accused, senior advocate P P Hegde submitted that the relationship was consensual and that the two had been in love for several years. He also contended that the case is being exaggerated due to political reasons and that attempts are being made by opponents to malign the image of the accused’s father.

During the hearing, the bench headed by Justice M Nagaprasanna raised several key questions. Observing that the child was born from the relationship with the accused, the court remarked that marriage could be a better option and that it would not be right to render the woman and child helpless. The bench further noted that, as the father, it is the responsibility of the accused to take care of the child. The court also questioned whether the accused was willing to provide a monthly maintenance of Rs 10,000 to the woman.

The high court has directed the accused to submit his response and adjourned the hearing to April 24. The case has drawn attention at both social and legal levels, and a significant decision is expected in the coming days.

In a crucial development, a DNA test report confirmed that Krishna J Rao is the father of the child born to the woman. The report, which was received in September 2025, marked a turning point in the case. Earlier, Krishna J Rao had been arrested in Mysuru and later released on bail. He is currently out on bail.
