Shivamogga, Aug 24: The Yuvamitra Youth Commission of the Diocese of Shimoga joyfully celebrated National Youth Sunday 2026 in August 23 at Good Shepherd Church, Gopala, Shivamogga. The theme for the day was inspired by John 16:33; ‘Do not be afraid, I have overcome the world.’
The day began with an energetic ice-breaking session by the ICYM DEXCO and YCS/YSM DTS, followed by a solemn opening prayer led by the Liturgy Team. The celebration was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp, symbolizing light, hope, wisdom and the presence of God, by the dignitaries.
The welcome address was delivered by Lenny D’Sa, ICYM diocesan president. She warmly welcomed all dignitaries, deanery and unit directors, parish youth, DEXCO and DTS teams, and 185 participants gathered from different parts of the diocese.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Fr Simon Pinto, diocesan commission coordinator; Fr Stephen Maxi Albuquerque, parish priest of Good Shepherd Church and chancellor of the diocese of Shimoga; Fr Christu Raj Neelgal SDB, Carmel deanery youth director; Fr Franklin D’Souza, diocesan youth director; Sr Lenny D'Costa, YCS/YSM lady animator; Lenny D'Sa, ICYM diocesan youth president; Suhas Martin, ICYM national general secretary; Rexin Pinto, YCS/YSM diocesan president; and resource persons, Deon and his MFC youth team.
In his address, Fr Simon Pinto spoke on the topic ‘Manavana Ghanate’ and reflected that ‘AI shouldn’t make us less human.’ He reminded the youth to uphold human dignity, values and relationships in the age of technology.
The highlight of the morning was the spiritual sharing and musical enrichment session led by the MFC Youth Team from Bangalore, consisting of Deon, Revan, Annalise, Philip, Anthea, and Rhea. They led action songs, praise hymns, and worship. Deon gave a short session on God's merciful love, as manifested through Lord Jesus Christ, and how he helps and inspires young people in their suffering and crises. Deon, Philip, and Anthea shared their testimonies, and their sharing and lively interaction deeply inspired the young participants.
The afternoon session commenced with a presentation from the DEXCO and DTS Team, followed by a series of cultural programs and group activities facilitated by Fr Christy Raj. These activities were designed to foster interpersonal connections and enhance collaboration among participants from various parishes. Father Raj also emphasized the critical role of leadership within youth organizations. The session concluded with engaging group discussions where participants shared insights on both the benefits and drawbacks of various approaches, contributing to the overall positive and celebratory atmosphere of the National Youth Sunday event.
A special note of appreciation was extended by Fr Franklin D'Souza, diocesan youth director, to all the parish youth presidents for their active leadership and participation. The spirit of the day was beautifully expressed as: From different parts, one diocese; different cultures, languages, one faith; one in Jesus – diocese OF Shimoga Youth.
The prize distribution ceremony for the video making competition, centered on the theme of National Youth Sunday, followed. This event was held to acknowledge the talents and enthusiastic participation of the youth. Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Tirthahalli ICYM Unit was awarded first place, while Christ the King Church, Jogfalls secured second place. The concluding message was delivered by Fr Franklin D’Souza, the diocesan youth director, who encouraged the youth to lead lives characterized by faith, courage, service, and hope.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Rexin Pinto, president of YCS/YSM. Sheethal Britto and Melvin D'Cunha served as the masters of ceremony for the entire event.
The day concluded with a reaffirmed dedication to upholding Christian principles and serving as exemplars of divine love, drawing inspiration from Blessed Carlo Acutis's profound statement, "Always remember that you are unique and precious in the eyes of God," and Pope Francis's insightful declaration, "You are the now of God."
