Mangaluru, Mar 1: Urban development minister Byrathi Basavaraj has directed officials to throw open the Surathkal, Kadri and Kankanady markets built at a cost of Rs 82 crore to the public within the next 10 days.

Addressing the officials at a meeting held in the outskirts of the city, he said no problems should arise pertaining to the disposal of wastes in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) limits. He directed all the officials to engage themselves more in beautifying the city. He also directed officials to ensure that adequate drinking water is supplied to the citizens with the onset of summer season.

Basavaraj said a time limit should be fixed to complete the works under the MCC.

He said the funds released under various government schemes should reach the beneficiaries so that money is usefully spent and warned the officials against the return of unused funds. He also directed the officials to expedite the works and finish them without keeping them pending.

He directed officials to ensure that there are no flaws in ensuring the functioning of the streetlights. He said care should be taken to ensure that people are not affected due to the footpath vendors.

The minister directed officials to complete all pending tasks by ensuring that they are present to get them completed under the purview of Smart City Limited, MCC and Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

Basavaraj said the MCC should present the budget for the year.

MLA Rajesh Nayak, MUDA chairman Ravishankar Mijaru, MCC commissioner Channabasappa, Smart City official Arun Bhat, MUDA commissioner Bhaskar and other officials from Smart City Ltd, MCC, MUDA and KUIDFC were also present.
