US issues security alert for Americans amid heightened Middle East tensions

Washington, Sep 20: The United States has issued a security alert for Americans in and around the Middle East, warning that the security situation remains complex and could deteriorate without warning amid heightened regional tensions.

The US Department of State advised Americans currently in the region to remain highly vigilant and warned of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions.

The department also said Iranian-supported Houthi forces had carried out attacks against Saudi Arabia, including targeting civilian airports, and cautioned that the ongoing military conflict could escalate rapidly.

Americans outside the region have been advised to seriously reconsider travel to and through the Middle East. Those travelling to or from the region have been urged to closely monitor information from airports and airlines.

The State Department further warned that US diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Iran and groups supporting Iran could also target other US interests overseas, including locations associated with Americans and US businesses.

Americans in the region have been advised to follow the latest security guidance issued by the nearest US embassy or consulate and contact the State Department for information or assistance.

The department said country-specific travel advisories are available through its official channels.
