Mumbai, Sep 21: A businessman was booked by Bandra Police after his 17-year-old son was allegedly caught riding a scooter during a police bandobast in Bandra West on Sunday.

The minor was stopped along with his friend, another minor who was riding pillion, after they travelled on the two-wheeler from Chinchbunder in Dongri to Bandra West.

The teenager was intercepted by Bandra traffic police constable Sangita Patil at Mehboob Circle around 11.15 a.m. after she spotted him riding the scooter with another boy seated behind him.

According to police, Patil stopped the rider and found that he was below 18 years of age and did not have a valid driving licence.

A police officer from Bandra Police Station said the boy’s father was served a notice after police learnt that he was aware his son had taken the two-wheeler for a ride.

The scooter is owned by Altaf M Siddiqui Hingora, 45, a businessman from Chinchbunder. Police said Hingora allegedly told them that he had given the vehicle to his son to ride.

“Patil filed the complaint against him, stating that allowing a minor to drive could endanger the rider and other citizens,” the police officer said.

Hingora has been booked under Sections 180 and 181 of the Motor Vehicles Act for allegedly allowing an unauthorised person to drive the vehicle and permitting a minor to drive without a valid licence.

Section 181 provides for a fine of Rs 5,000 for driving without a valid licence or in violation of prescribed age limits, along with a possible jail term of up to three months upon conviction.

Police said the case was registered after the father allegedly allowed his minor son to ride the scooter despite knowing that he was underage.
