Mangaluru: SJEC observes National Science Day, holds event for DK, Udupi school students

Mangaluru, Feb 28: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) AICTE IDEA Lab in association with department of mechanical engineering observed National Science Day 2023 here at SJEC on Tuesday February 28 to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian Physicist Sir C V Raman in 1928, which led to his Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.

The programme was conducted for the school students of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi district.

Deputy director and professor at NITTE centre for science Dr Smitha Hegde said, “Science is all about asking right question and rich question.”

DDPI DK Rajalakshmi K said, “We are now lot more dependent on science and there is need to create awareness among students on contribution of our scientists.”

Proprietor of M/s Olympus Refrigeration INC Sumith Rao said, “There are many scientific discoveries in this world. It is a rare case where CV Raman got an award for what he had discovered. Indian scientists are not recognised for their discovering because we are late in publishing it. I urge students to keep on trying and striving hard till you succeed.”

Director in-charge Fr Allwyn D’Souza said, “The programme will be inspiration for young minds to become scientists. Opportunities will create innovation.”

Principal Dr Rio D’Souza, HOD mechanical engineering Dr Shreeranga Bhat, convenor Rolvin D’Silva and others were present.

As many as 33 teams with 231 students and 34 teachers across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are taking part in National Science Day programme. For the day, a number of events are scheduled, including a project exhibition, quiz, visit to the SJEC AICTE IDEA Lab and other state-of-the-art facilities on the campus, talks by illustrious individuals etc. The event is aimed at promoting scientific temper and creating awareness about the importance of science and technology among school students.

Vice principal Dr Purushottam Chippar welcomed the gathering, convenor Smitha D’Souza rendered the vote of thanks, and Himani Kishan Raj and Rupal D’Souza compered the event.
