Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, May 9: As many as 40 people including children and women staying near Udupi railway station, who were preparing to walk to Telangana on Moday May 11, were assured help and convinced by Udupi tahsildar Pradeep Kurdekar, local leaders and Manipal College students to stay back.

They will be registered through Seva Sindhu app and will be sent following directions of Telangana deputy commissioner.

Speaking to Daijiworld, tahsildar Pradeep said that they were working as coolies in the railway station and doing petty jobs. They were provided food during the lockdown, he said.

The people were determined to go. The officials are not sure if their applications for travel will be accepted as there are lockdown norms to be followed.

Pradeep said, “Earlier, fishermen a Malpe were held back from travel for a day. There are 1,200 people belonging to other states in Udupi including 400 people that have remained in Malpe. Those belonging to south India are likely to be sent by buses though there is issue related to language.

“Those belonging to north India may face problems. The matter is brought to the notice of Udupi deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha. He will discuss the issue with Telangana deputy commissioner tomorrow. The workers are accommodated in temporary shelter. We may have to wait for another two days for a decision,” he said.

    No one should fall for these kind of pressure tactics. Allow them to walk to their fate.

    With due respect to the Govt. I totally disagree with you. This is not pressure tactics. The poor labourers have gone to the brink and they are looking at stone wall in front of them. This lockdown is reducing the ordinary people into beggars . They are not responsible for this mess .. we must help them or atleast have symphathy. Walking with kids in this summer is not a joke .

    @Shashi Shetty,
    I couldn't agree with you more. The need of the hour is for us to be Indians first with the ability to empathtise with our fellow brothers and sisters cutting across geopgraphical/religious/social borders. We can't adopt the policy of 'to each his own' as COVID19 unlike us humans cuts across all barriers of Nationality/Religion/Wealth.

    Almost everyone in Mangalore are trying to do whatever charity they can. Most of us are also donating food. I don't think there will be shortage of food to any family in Mangalore or Udupi. Even in the remote places, food and basic need commodities are being supplied.
    Hence, at this time of pandemic, everyone should stay where they are. Attempting to move will exert undue pressure on the government, it might also add to the spread of the virus.

    how much a person can live on Charity ? when one doesn't know where his or her next meal is coming from. Its not a easy life ? Moreover , they have come here to work and take care of their family . They probably don't have proper house to live ? Human being will Psychologically break when they have to stay in Shanty and doing nothing and the future looking bleak. No work is not just they are starving it is their depends also starving . I recon as a citizen of the country to ensure that, these people must be sent back home. Also, in future when such emergency occurs the Migrat workers and their safety must be considered. ( probably - we must train the citizens to be aware of the emergent situation in the world and if anything getting worse people must must go back their nest with a long term plan of 6 months atealst).

    Govt must also encourage people to have sufficient money to meet emergency. If people are comfortable and secure Govt can fight the maladies very easily.

    Instead of spending on the free transport and free quarantine facility for NRIs, Govt should arrange for stay, food and transport of these poor people.

    These poor people are working for development of this country. They are participate in electing Govt. They are looking after their aged parents here, instead of running to gulf countries to work like slaves.
