Mangaluru: Yettinahole petition - Green Tribunal reserves its orders

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 14: On Monday May 13, final hearings into two separate petitions filed against the execution of Yettinahole project which plans to provide drinking water to several districts including Kolar and Chikkaballapur, were held at the National Green Tribunal's bench at New Delhi. The bench has reserved its verdict.

The petitioner, K S Somashekhar, had questioned the permission given to use large tracts of forest for executing this project.

He also has pointed out that ecological balance of Western Ghats would be in peril if the project is executed. The bench which heard arguments from both the sides said that it has reserved judgement in both the cases.

The solution is solar based desalination plant where water from sea can be converted to drinking, agriculture.

Let this project stop for ever. We lost so much forests so far. I am really under utter shock to note that, how our some educated/literate people of dakshina Kannada can say that these, flood/water scarcity not because of Yettinahole project..?? This water scarcity we started facing, ever since this yettinahole project implemented by force. As a result vast areas of forest are cut..and ever green ghats destroyed. Mud has become loose. Now is it possible for us to grow forests same like before within two/three years? Animals will have no shelter. Three years before people of chikkballapura commented saying, we have enough sources of water here itself if government properly invest on maintaining the rivers, wells, reservoirs. No need of diversion. Those who say, this is happening not because of diversion, please analyse and compare. Can you answer how madikeri, sullya surrounding areas severely flooded? Let us unite and stand as one strong pillar and strongly object this diversion.. Politicians only can see rain water going to the sea in dakshina Kannada ? Chikkaballapura, kolara no rains? Let them accumulate water and improve the sources there. Let us live and let them live too!

Let’s hope good sense prevails. We also expect the Green Tribunal to take into account last years devastating floods in the Western Ghats as evidence, which occurred due to the cutting of trees for river diversion.

If the Yettinahole project is sanctioned, this will only be the beginning of our troubles. The worst is yet to come.
The people of this district should unite and fight tooth and nail to stop this project. This is only a money making racket to benefit the politicians of the Congress and the BJP. Some might argue that only the excess water from the rains would be diverted. They conveniently forget that to execute the project, countless trees on the Western Ghats would have to be cut. In fact, many have already been felled. If there are no trees, rainfall would reduce drastically resulting in shortage of water for the people here. Yettinahole project would sound the death knell of this region. At no cost should we allow this to go ahead.

This all is happening as corporates are funding secretly to have their buisnesses running in other parts. Water is must for them and at any cost and Politicians are sponsored for only getting elected.

Yettinahole project was just conceptualised only for the sake of making money for Congress and BJP politicians and it is nothing to do with providing drinking water etc. But sad thing is that Moily and Gowda being from out district has let this happen and now we see we do not have water at all. Due to this the netravati river dried up and dying, project has damaged the entire Western ghat’s sensitive ecological balance. This is led to decrease in rains, increase in temperature .Save this comment, we will see this drastic impact of this in another four to five years if not long. Still we have time, let them stop the project, remove all the dams or barriers, let them replant the tress they have cut down for the project . This will happen only if people fight for it without political ideology. But it said often we are easily side-tracked by our political ideology , we forget our ultimate objective and start blaming each other.

Trees are our life support, we are learning this since school. Please put your school studies to use people of India. Don't cut trees in name of development

Even the courts are biased now. This project is totally bogus with some leaders from Congress and BJP are more interested in this project for money than drinking water.
