Udupi: Hindu Janajagruti Samiti seeks ban of New Year parties at historical venues

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi

Udupi, Dec 24: The members of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) have submitted a plea to Udupi additional DC Vidya requesting a ban in smoking, consuming alcohol and organising parties in forts, tourist spots, historical and public places as part of New Year celebrations.

Terming the New Year parties as a western practice and a breakdown of Indian culture, the plea states that these parties encourage consumption of drugs, alcohol and smoking. “These parties are not only destroying the youth but have claimed many lives, with people under influence of alcohol driving rash and meeting with accidents,” the plea claims.

The plea regrets that recently the forts, castles and historical spots are being used as venues for New Year parties, and hence destroying the sanctity and the values laid down by the Maharajas who laid foundation to the country’s rich culture.

The plea seeks the district administration to interfere and stop parties at these places and hence protect sanctity of these places. The plea also requests stringent law and order to avoid any untoward incidents on New Year's eve. It also adds that the Samiti members are ready to volunteer for the task if given an opportunity.

Samiti members Gururaj, Vishwanath Nayak submitted the plea.

These fringe elements are given a prominence in the politics of the country. That is why they are proposing all these measures. Actually they do not know what is Indian and what is foreign. New Year is not foreign now. It has entered Indian culture centuries back. Alcohol, smoking, partying etc. are not foreign/western culture. If people do it within limit and in a decent way these activities give people enjoyment. Why anyone should be jealous about those who enjoy on some auspicious occasions like New Year? This jealousy and hatred are patent of these fringe elements.

These protectors of Indian culture themselves have no values whatsoever, hence are a big blot on the culture.

They are in fact moral policing in the guise of protecting Indian culture, by preventing people from celebrating New Year.
